OCDP Returns to Give Drummers the Spotlight

OCDP Returns to Give Drummers the Spotlight
Michael Molenda

On the 35th anniversary of its origin, Guitar Center is relaunching Orange County Drum & Percussion (OCDP) along with original founder Daniel Jensen and No Doubt drummer and brand ambassador Adrian Young as advisors.

OCDP hit the scene in 1991, offering stunning finishes, custom-shop artistry and bold sounds for drummers seeking to steal the spotlight.

“We'd make things more elaborate and crazy looking to draw attention to drummers and their bands,” says Jensen. “Drummers are always in the back and guitar players always get the spotlight. So, OCDP kits allowed drummers to bring their look and sound to the forefront. I grew up in a Tommy Lee [Mötley Crüe drummer] world, where 11-year-old Daniel definitely thought all of the elaborate, twirling drum kits were something. I wanted to take that to the next level.”

The initial relaunch of OCDP includes nine products—all available exclusively at Guitar Center right now.

One of the highlights of the comeback is Young plans to highlight OCDP during No Doubt’s residency at the Las Vegas Sphere.

“OCDP is part of my musical DNA,” says Young. “I’m looking forward to being on stage at the Sphere this May and playing with a new OCDP kit to show the world the brand’s iconic energy is officially back.”

Channeling that “iconic energy” was definitely part of the relaunch strategy. After all, it isn’t OCDP if it doesn’t beat to the brash, daring and vibrant side of drum design.

“The nice thing about all the new stuff is it's definitely back to a more of a boutique vibe—which is where OCDP started,” says Jensen. “We would have skinnier toms or longer bass drums. We did double-wide bass drum hoops. We would take metal and wood or acrylic and metal and collaborate those together. We would do hybrid kits, different variations of plies, different size vents. We did fur, weird snake skins and alligators and ostrich and so on. But there’s a great assortment with the colors and size of the new stuff that gives the old-school OCDP vibe. Fans of the brand will love what they used to love about it back in the day with the latest new versions of it now.”

“The tradition of OCDP is there are no limitations,” adds Young. “And because of the lack of limitations, some of the soundscape options possible with these drums are beyond what some other manufacturers offer.”

If you want a personal rundown on the OCDP brand and its offerings, get ahold of one of our knowledgeable Gear Advisers or local Guitar Center associates. They can help you find just the right amount of OCDP sparkle and swagger to own the stage at your next gig.
