Billy Idol and Steve Stevens to Join Guitar Center’s Hollywood Rockwalk

Billy Idol and Steve Stevens to Join Guitar Center’s Hollywood Rockwalk
Drew Beaupré

Since the early ’80s, that inimitable signature sneer and hook-forward allure have struck audiences like a lightning bolt. If you’ve ever been in a Guitar Center and heard someone zeroing in on that unmistakable “Rebel Yell” riff, you already understand why Billy Idol and Steve Stevens have a special place in modern music history.

Guitar Center is inducting Idol and Stevens into the Hollywood Rockwalk, the handprint-and-signature tribute outside Guitar Center’s flagship Hollywood store on Sunset Boulevard. It’s a literal imprint in the concrete—but it’s also a nod to the way legendary artists leave their proverbial fingerprints on generations of musicians.

“Billy Idol and Steve Stevens didn’t just write hits—they built a partnership where a punk frontman and a virtuoso guitarist made each other sharper. The ‘Rebel Yell’ intro alone has inspired generations of guitar players. Walk into any Guitar Center on a Saturday, and you’ll still hear someone chasing that tone. That’s the definition of Rockwalk-worthy,” said Gabe Dalporto, CEO of Guitar Center.

Idol and Stevens are one of those rare duos where the chemistry isn’t just “singer and guitarist.” It’s a shared language—hooks, attitude and a guitar tone that can go from street-level snarl to widescreen drama in the same passage. Their run of ’80s staples soundtracked the era and also helped shape how guitar-heavy pop rock could punch through. A slew of fist-pumping, adrenaline-addled classics from the Billy Idol, Rebel Yell, Whiplash Smile eras and beyond have inspired countless music lovers to take the stage.

And the story isn’t locked in the past tense. Idol and Stevens have kept the partnership moving for decades, taking those songs back on the road and immortalizing their legacy while keeping that creative magic alive working on new material.

For Idol, the Rockwalk honor lands with a sense of nostalgia. The music store has always been a home base for him and Stevens.

“Steve and I have spent so much of our lives around music shops, trying new things while working hard to perfect our sound, with Guitar Center right at the center of it all,” said Billy Idol. “Being inducted into the Rockwalk together feels like a real full-circle moment after all these years of making music side by side.”

Stevens points to the importance of legacy and passing on the baton.

“It’s absolutely awesome that Billy Idol and I will be inducted into the Guitar Center Rockwalk,” said Steve Stevens. “We join some of the greatest musicians ever in this honor. I hope some young guitarist looks down at our impressions and marches inside to buy their first guitar, just as I did. This building is filled with dreams and possibilities. All you need is desire and passion.”

That has always been the energy of the Rockwalk. It’s a tourist destination, sure. But it’s also a working landmark for musicians—a place where fans, players and history itself meet right on the sidewalk, and where inspiration can turn into a first instrument, pedal, band or first step forward into one’s music journey.

Since its 1985 founding by former Guitar Center owner Ray Sherr, more than 150 artists and innovators have been inducted, spanning rock, blues, soul and other popular music genres. The names stamped into the concrete outside Guitar Center Hollywood include Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Stevie Wonder, Aerosmith, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Alanis Morissette, Black Sabbath, The Ramones, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash.
