Fender Vintera III Mid ’60s Jazzmaster Demo With “Freaky Rob” Gueringer

Fender Vintera III Mid ’60s Jazzmaster Demo With “Freaky Rob” Gueringer
Guitar Center

The Fender Vintera III series takes a more year-specific approach than earlier Vintera releases, breaking its vintage-inspired lineup into early-, mid- and late-decade versions instead of blending the feel and tone of an entire era together. The Mid ’60s Jazzmaster follows that path with period-minded features and the offset character that continues to give the Jazzmaster its own place in Fender’s catalog.

In “Freaky Rob” Gueringer’s demo, the focus is less on nostalgia and more on application. He frames the Jazzmaster as a working guitar for rhythm parts, subtle textures and tones that can live inside an arrangement without taking it over.

“Freaky Rob” on When a Jazzmaster Fits the Music

“I like a Jazzmaster in situations that require a little bit more rhythm, or—to be honest—more mellow or subtle guitar tones, such as jazz or experimental hip-hop and R&B. This guitar is a really good fit there.”

For Gueringer, the appeal starts with context. The draw is the way the Jazzmaster can handle parts that need subtlety, texture and restraint.

A Shape, Feel and Voice That Open Up Different Textures

He also points to the way the instrument’s physical identity affects how he plays. The offset body, the response of the pickups and the overall setup push him toward parts and textures that feel distinct from what he might find on other solidbodies.

“These Jazzmaster pickups are, to me, kind of between a single-coil and a humbucker pickup, because they give me the spank and the brightness from the single-coil that I love, but they also have the warmth from a humbucker. You put those together, and you can get a lot of cool experimental tones, which is why I feel like it’s a great fit for that type of music.”

Turning a Guitar into Pads, Layers and Sample-Like Parts

One of the more revealing parts of the demo comes when Gueringer talks about sessions and live gigs where the artist does not necessarily want a recognizable “guitar sound.” That is where the Jazzmaster becomes especially useful to him.

“There’s a lot of times on gigs where the artists may want me to play guitar, but don't necessarily want a traditional guitar sound. Whether I’m playing the same part as a keyboard, or I’m playing a synth line or a string line, I just have to find the tones that match and complement what’s already there—the Jazzmaster is something that is really, really good at doing that.

It’s great for padding, it’s great for mimicking other parts that may be in the song, and I also love pairing it with effects like chorus, modulation, reverb and echo to push it into a whole different sonic world.”

The Case for the Mid ’60s Jazzmaster

“Freaky Rob” Gueringer presents the Fender Vintera III Mid ’60s Jazzmaster as a guitar with range, personality and real-world purpose. What stands out in his demo is the way the guitar can handle rhythm work, subtle textures, pad-like tones and even fiercer fuzz sounds without losing its identity.
