Guitar Center Drum-Off Is Back

Guitar Center Drum-Off Is Back
Drew Beaupré

Guitar Center’s celebrated Drum-Off is returning in 2026, bringing back a national drumming competition that had been an institution in the drum community for decades. Beginning May 1, drummers will be able to visit any of Guitar Center’s 300 stores across the U.S. to record and submit an original three-minute on-camera audition video using an in-store acoustic kit and a simple, step-by-step submission process.

First launched in 1988 and run for 28 years, Drum-Off became a proving ground for players of every style. Over its lifetime, the competition has seen more than 100,000 drummers participate, and it has helped spotlight emerging talent that went on to perform with Grammy-winning and festival-headlining acts.

“I cannot tell you how often musicians—not just drummers—ask me when we’re going to bring back Drum-Off,” said Guitar Center CEO Gabe Dalporto. “It was literally an iconic part of music culture for nearly three decades, shining a spotlight on emerging talent and launching careers. Well, it’s back, just bigger and louder."

What Is Drum-Off?

Drum-Off started in Southern California as a grassroots, store-led competition—anyone could sign up, sit down at the kit and show what they had. As Guitar Center expanded nationally in the early ’90s, Drum-Off grew with it, evolving into a multi-stage competition.

Along the way, Drum-Off became a defining platform within the drumming world, featuring highly respected judges including Travis Barker, Peter Criss, Chad Smith, Taylor Hawkins, and Steve Ferrone. Past competitors include Tony Royster Jr. (Jay-Z, Katy Perry), Cora Coleman-Dunham (Prince, Beyoncé), Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta), Glen Sobel (Alice Cooper) and Ilan Rubin (Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters).

The 2026 competition continues that legacy with a lineup of panel of high-profile judges, with more details to be announced in the very near future.

How to Enter Drum-Off 2026

Drum-Off auditions open May 1 at Guitar Center stores nationwide. Participants can visit any store to record and submit an original three-minute on-camera audition video. Every location will feature a premium acoustic drum kit available for auditions, with a streamlined process designed to make submissions easy and consistent.

The 2026 competition begins in-store, then builds into live events as drummers advance.

How Drum-Off 2026 Works

After auditions begin in stores nationwide, select entries will go on to live district competitions held at 24 Guitar Center locations. From there, advancing drummers will compete in regional events in major music hubs, including Hollywood, Nashville and New York City.

This year’s Drum-Off competition culminates August 20, 2026, at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, CA, where six finalists will perform live in front of an audience and a panel of judges for the title of Drum-Off Champion.

The Drum-Off 2026 Prize Package

The Drum-Off Champion will receive $25,000 in cash, a premium drum kit and cymbal package, a brand endorsement opportunity and an electronic drum kit from Roland. The winner will also travel to Drumeo HQ to create original content across Drumeo’s platforms.

Prizing builds throughout the competition, starting at the district level. Up to 480 district competitors will receive a commemorative gear and swag bag, and advancing participants will earn gear from leading drum and percussion brands, including DW, Zildjian, OCDP, Pearl, Roland, Yamaha, Gretsch, TAMA, Promark, EVANS, Remo, SABIAN, Mapex, Drumeo, Ludwig and Vic Firth.

Additional updates, including judge announcements and full submission details, will be released leading up to the live round portion of the contest.
