Seymour Duncan

collapse expand iconDescription

Before Seymour built his own business, he was working for Fender Soundhouse in London. This was when The Yardbirds were kings and Seymour befriended some of his favorite musicians, and rewound pickups for them when they needed it. One of these custom rewind recipes went to a very special player, and as a result of Seymour’s meticulous record keeping, this pickup lives on today.

The recipe for this SH-18 Whole Lotta Humbucker pickup set begins with a rough-cast Alnico 5 magnet, plain enamel wire and Seymour’s unique winding pattern. The bridge is a vintage-hot 8.78k DC resistance and the neck is similarly beefy at 8.20k. The rough-cast magnets add warmth and balance so everything sounds bigger. What is sonically unique about the Whole Lotta Humbucker pickups is the way that they push your amp and add a very slight natural compression and sustain to your sound. Hand built in Santa Barbara, CA, the Whole Lotta Humbuckers use a rough-cast Alnico 5 bar magnet, nickel silver bottom plate, 4-conductor lead wire for multiple wiring options, and are wax potted for squeal-free operation. Seymour’s early '70s London PAF rewind recipe that graced the guitars of some of the most important British artists of the time.

I recently purchased an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Blackback Pro. While I was incredibly happy with the guitar, I knew that swapping out the stock pickups for something with more "umph" was important. I did my research and looked at everything from classic 57, to the Seymour Duncan slash pickups, but I finally decided to give the Whole Lotta Humbuckers a go and boy am I happy I did. While the name obviously describes the capability of these pickups to recreate the Jimmy Page/Led Zeppelin tone, it's important to understand that you aren't limited to that "sound" alone. I've dialed in all kinds of tones with these bad boys and they respond wonderfully. If you own a Les Paul and are looking to supercharge the sound, I can't recomend these pickups enough.

I installed these in my 2006 PRS CU22. They replaced my DiMarzio Super Distortion and Humbucker from Hell set. I have had the stock Dragon II's, a Duncan Custom, Air Norton, Stew Mac Overwounds over the years. I use DiAddario NYC XL's. I recently purchased a Marshall 2525H and the DiMarzio setup sounded good but the Duncan Whole Lotta Humbucker set took it over the top! The clarity and balance in these are just amazing! The chords just sound nearly 3D. Turning the volume down on the drive channel brings the dirt down but maintains balance. The neck pickup has that classic spongy sound but not muddy at all. I can see why Page used the originals for so long. Mr. Duncan really could have built his company on this set alone. I am a classic rock sort of guy, however my metal head son loves the sound of them too. The bottom line is, clarity and balance. If you want articulate, clear and near 3D like tone, look no farther...

These were personally made for Artists like Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page and just released to the public, I believe, in 2013! It's a no brainer little buddy!!! Make sure you put these pickups on a heavy guitar body... Magic March...

These are some of the best pickups I've used and I've tried a lot. LZ is my favorite band though to so I'm a little biased. They sound great and not just when playing LZ. I've got these in a 96 LP Studio and they sound great. Never dark but never shrill or harsh. They have a way of being able to sound edgy but smooth at the same time if that makes sense. Really nice pickups and unique.

It would take modification. The pickups in the guitar are shaped differently than standard humbucker.
