Keeley Electronics - Dyno My Roto Tri Chorus Rotary Flange

Description
The magic to the chorus sound in the Dyno My Roto is the three LFOs that give you lush modulations that truly sing out like a chorus of guitars. Most chorus pedals, in fact nearly all, are simply two voice, one straight and one modulated. This offers twice the amount of joy by modulating another voice. That significantly reducing the ability to just hear one voice being affected and smears a couple voices in an effect that is truly enjoyable to listen to.
Keeley came up with a Rotary Cabinet package that gives you a Proximity Control. The Proximity Control controls how far away you are from the spinning speaker cabinet. This adds a depth and distance to the cabinet and is a touch like a reverb control. It gives you that spatial expanse that can give you presence or depth in the chorus-like rotations. Lastly, while the designers were spinning things, they crafted a RotoFlange sound that has a simple negative feedback control. Easy to use and gets you the most classic flanger sounds possible.
So whether you are going for a Alex Lifeson of Rush tone, a Andy Summers of the Police tone, or an SRV Crossfire rotary tone, the Dyno My Roto has you covered.

Mediocre Chorus Pedal

I'm a big chorus fan, so when I was looking for something a bit different, I had to give this one a try. It does sound a bit unique, which may inspire some, but to me it sounds thin and metallic, not lush and warm. I couldn't get a sound out of it that I liked enough to keep the pedal, so I returned it. I preferred the more classic chorus sounds of the Boss CH-1 or EHX Small Clone.

Keeley's Dyno-My-Roto pedal is like a time machine. As someone who grew up in the 80s and currently plays in frequent gigging R.E.M. and Police tribute bands, I can attest to the pedal's immaculate recreation of the era's sounds. The Leslie sound is good, though I perceive a slight treble dip when I kick it in. The Flanger is excellent, but does not do "Unchained" exactly like the MXR. However, the chorus has everything I believe other choruses lack. It's not the warmest chorus, but the swirly swish it gets is spot-on 80s. Better than every other choruses I've used. And it's not just a chorus, as it has elements of flanger and phaser in it. To my ear, The Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary" is an MXR Phase 100 (maybe, maybe not) , yet the Chorus on the Dyno-My-Roto chorus nails that sound. At the same time, it also nails the beautiful sounds on Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." Not necessarily guitar hero tunes, but to someone who grew up on these sounds will appreciate the special thing this pedal does. I use it regularly for all the Police tunes I play, and it's immaculate. The Dyno-My-Roto is a brilliant pedal.
Excellent effects but one notch down from greatness

The Dyno My Roto is an excellent, musical and very usable pedal, but it has limitations. The chorus makes a beautiful sound but doesn't have the warmth and lushness of a good analog chorus, like a CE-2 or vintage DC-2. Then again, it has a more complex tonality and nobody expects it to sound analog. The rotary effect is very good. If I hadn't owned an H&K Tube Rotosphere, the Keeley would impress me a lot more. But where the H&K sounded like a Leslie, the Keeley sounds like a Leslie simulation. The H&K has authentic touches like an upper horn spinning separately from the lower speaker and slowing down at a different rate, and the sound is very three dimensional, and it's stereo. The Keeley doesn't do anything like that, but that is comparing it to a tube effect costing several times what this one does. It would be usable in a live setting, but probably fall short for pro level recording. Finally, the flanger is possibly the most convincing effect in this pedal. It sounds very close to the classic flangers with it's resonance and convincing swooshing sounds. So while it is quite a feat to get all these very good effects into one compact box, it doesn't quite achieve the authentic and rich sounds of classic tube or analog effects, but for a compact digital pedal it is excellent, and quite usable.
