collapse expand iconDescription

The Epiphone Riviera Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar brings vintage appeal and sound to the modern guitarist. The Riviera features a layered maple body and neck, as well as Epiphone's trademark pickguard with a metal "E" logo. Equipped with Epiphone PRO mini humbuckers and a LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge, the Riviera produces a range of tones suitable for any genre. First introduced in the early 1960s, the Riviera has been played by renowned artists such as Robben Ford, Otis Rush, and Lou Reed. The legendary Epiphone Riviera is new to a generation of guitarists seeking a bold yet versatile instrument.

Vintage-Inspired Style with Modern Sound

With double cutaways and an iconic semi-hollow ES-style shape, the Epiphone Riviera oozes vintage cool. A Royal Tan gloss finish, gold hardware, and art deco-inspired pickguard give the Riviera a retro esthetic, while Epiphone PRO mini humbuckers provide a focused, bright tone suited for today's musical styles. This blend of classic style and contemporary sound allows guitarists to achieve tones reminiscent of the 1960s as well as modern rock and alternative genres.

Playability and Performance

Featuring a rounded C-shaped neck, the Riviera has a profile comfortable for most playing styles. A Graph Tech NuBone nut enhances resonance and sustain. Epiphone vintage deluxe tuners provide rock-solid tuning stability during performances and recording sessions. The Riviera's LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and tailpiece also aid in tuning stability and alter string tension for optimal playability.

Versatile and Expressive

With a semi-hollow maple body and pickups designed for articulate tone, the Riviera responds dynamically to a player's touch. Notes bloom and feedback organically. Chords ring out with piano-like warmth and clarity. Melodies soar and solos sing. The Riviera's sonic versatility allows guitarists to explore the expressive capabilities of their playing. From jazz to classic rock and alternative music, the Riviera serves as a conduit for creative freedom.

Beautiful, Quality Axe with a Great Array of Tones

I'm a bassist focusing on improving my bass technique by applying guitar exercises and a bit of theory, and vice-versa. (Long ago, I was studying jazz guitar with a renowned local jazz guitarist @ Peabody School of Music. The royal tan model was on backorder for a solid nine months; it arrived two days after Christmas. It was nicely set up right out of the box. And what a pretty piece of eye candy it is! Intonation adjustments were minor, with the action pretty much exactly where I like it. In April 2022, I tested the metallic burgundy model on several high-quality combos such as a Fender Blues Jr., Supro Delta Blues (I think that was the name), and a lightly used Vox AC-10. The Riviera sounded so good matched with the Vox, I bought them on the same day. Immediately upon receiving it I gave it a thorough exam for flaws, from fret edges and dressing, to evenness of finish and fit; operation of tuning keys; nut depth and width spacing; neck straightness; the binding work; and inlays on the fingerboard and headstock. I couldn't find one flaw. Then onto the business end--the pickups, pots, bridge and that signature "Frequensator" tailpiece. Again, no issues. Pots are smooth and effective, the pickup switch is a wee bit hinky because it's a bit rough/loud...not a show stopper. I owned an Epiphone AlleyKat a decade ago, and I loved the neck mini-humbucker sound; wasn't crazy about the full-sized bridge humbucker. The two "NY Minis" work great together or split. The range of sounds from jazz to classic rock (on both pups) to hard-driving rock or C/W leads on the bridge pup is impressive. The feel of it is also impressive: nicely balanced though a bit heavy (8.25 lbs I think). The mahogany neck is finished in urethane, which I'm not a fan of, but at least it's a light-to-moderate finish. And since I placed the order when GC discounted it $200, I have little to complain about when considering value. The biggest win to me about the Riviera is its quality construction throughout. Though it sports a made-in-China pedigree, nothing about it suggests cheap. I give it a 4.5 (dinked because of the urethane neck finish).

Bad pots.... Needs frets dressed. . otherwise a beautiful GREAT sounding axe! Going to take it to warranty place to correct the issues rather than return it...took too long to get this color....

To be perfectly honest I'm not impressed..neck shape is NOT a rounded C as claimed..more just the same old Epiphone D shaped nonsense..fret ends weren't great, tuners are a little offset and crooked..it's getting returned.

  • Love this guitar

This guitar sounds awesome. I saw played this guitar about 5 months ago. People in the store were even digging it. I wanted it but couldn't afford it at that time. I went into a GC in Rochester NY and saw it again. Played for about a n hour. Then looked at the price tag. It was on clearance. Had it shipped to the house. Now I play it all the time.

  • Nice guitar but needs adjustments.

It's a handsome guitar that's for sure. Nice and light, mini-humbuckers have a unique clean sound, and control nobs smooth and work as expected. I was able to do a set-up very quickly right out of the box. Of course it comes with cheap strings that left my fingers covered with steel residue and I'm not sure you could find cheaper tuners, but they work. Unfortunately the frets simply aren't player ready, which is a shame because the effort in the rest of the guitar is superior for the price. Before you even bother playing it, take it to someone who is experienced with dressing out rough and uneven frets and have it restrung with decent strings. After that you'll be very happy.

  • Outstanding guitar

As i usually do, I had watched a bunch of videos on this guitar (as i was in the market for another hollow body). I was really excited to try one out in the store. The fret ends were so bad it wasn't even playable (like playing a neck full of daggers). Immediately bailed on my interest.

  • This is a great guitar at a great price!

I have been looking for a nice, semi hollow body guitar with classic tone and a beautiful finish. First and foremost, this is a well built instrument! The neck, tuners, bridge and pickups are very good quality. The finish and binding are beautiful and flawless. The action and intonation were spot on right out of the box too. But the best part is that the tone is just what I wanted. I didn't even put a new set of strings on it and this piece sounds so good! Dont be put off by the Frequensator tailpiece as it really nice and does what it was designed. It brightens up the top strings and smooths out the low strings. You can really hear it when playing muted bass strings. Overall, this is an awesome guitar at this price!
