Epiphone ES-335 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar Vintage Sunburst

Description
The Epiphone ES-335 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar Cherry brings a classic tone and style to the modern era. Epiphone has recreated the iconic ES-335 shape that helped define the sound of rock and roll. With a layered maple top, back and sides plus a solid maple tone block, this guitar resonates with a full, warm tone. Powered by Epiphone's Alnico Classic PRO humbuckers, the ES-335 can achieve a variety of vintage-inspired sounds from clean and jazzy to hard rock. Its rounded C-shaped neck and 12" radius laurel fingerboard allow for comfortable chording and soloing. Now guitarists everywhere can experience the legendary semi-hollowbody tone that shaped music history.
Alnico Classic PRO Humbuckers Deliver Iconic Tone
At the heart of the ES-335's sound are Epiphone's Alnico Classic PRO humbucking pickups. These pickups provide a wide range of vintage humbucker tones from warm and mellow to aggressive rock. With individual volume and tone controls for each pickup, you have full control over their sound. From jazz and blues to classic rock, the ES-335 can achieve any iconic semi-hollowbody tone.
Layered Maple Construction Creates Resonant Sound
Like the original ES-335, this Epiphone model features a layered maple top, back and sides along with a solid maple tone block. This construction gives the ES-335 a resonant, harmonically rich tone with piano-like sustain. The tone block also helps reduce feedback at high volumes, allowing guitarists to achieve semi-hollowbody tone for rock and roll. With eye-catching single-ply body and fingerboard binding, the ES-335 looks as good as it sounds.
Rounded Neck Profile and 12" Radius Laurel Fingerboard
The ES-335's rounded C neck profile and 12" radius laurel fingerboard provide a comfortable playing experience whether chording, soloing or bending strings. The fingerboard's moderate radius and medium jumbo frets make it easy to fret notes and chords. This combination of neck shape and fingerboard radius means the ES-335 will appeal to guitarists of all playing styles from rhythm to lead.
Classic Semi-Hollowbody Style
With its iconic double cutaway semi-hollowbody shape, the ES-335 epitomizes the style of 1950s and '60s rock and roll. Its arched top and f-holes give it a refined yet rebellious look. Other stylish touches include a Kalamazoo-style headstock, crown headstock inlay and dot fingerboard inlays. For guitarists seeking a bold yet traditional tone and style, the Epiphone ES-335 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar Cherry delivers.

Love it, 2nd one on order
I've been playing guitar over 50 years, owned and sold many new and vintage "Major" name brands. Even own an original 59 les Paul double cut-away. I've also built 4 guitars from raw lumber. Enough about me, This is a surprising find. My first but not last Epiphone. There is a vibe going on here. The inspired by Gibson line is master stroke of manufacturing. They nailed it. The guitar is all the essence of the original 335, and there are many versions made by Gibson alone. The last NAMN show I attended before Covid I was in Gibson's huge show room with probable 50 variations of the 335. I couldn't for the life of me really pick out one that I really liked- just too many to choose from. Epiphone however, wisely created basically 2, one with figured flame and one without. A couple of colors in each. The electronics, finish, playability, sound and Price are virtually the same. No jump in price like the Gibson line up - which more than doubles in some cases. The value here is solid. A friend of mine just built a 335, and he spent more on the wood for his project- not including the hardware and pickups than Guitar Center is asking for this finished guitar. I was close to building one myself, I am so glad I found this guitar- I got the Cherry stained 335. Now, be aware, as good as it gets, you should be prepared to add a few things to your purchase. New strings obviously, a hard shell case, Epiphone's is very reasonably priced, half that of Gibson's. Also, 4 out of 5 of these guitars I checked out in store were very well set up, that is the frets were smooth on the ends and the hardware was tight. I did find some of these that would require some fine tuning by a technician. I did dress and polish the frets on mine, though they were really great to start. But now the playability is equal to anything coming out of the Custom Shop. Let's face it. What you're really paying for if you go with a USA model is the nitro cel finish. It takes 2 months to finish a guitar properly with nitro. They have to sit and cure, and be filled and fussed with and after that the finish is hard but delicate. I'm really only a fan of Nitro on acoustic guitars. With electrics it just doesn't affect the sound. So would I buy it again, In fact I have ordered a Raspberry Tea burst 335 to round out my collection. I mean at this price why not? This is something I didn't even have to ask my wife about! Did I mention this guitar sounds amazing, esp the neck pickup, pots roll off very nice, neck is just the right dimensions, hits all three: Sounds good, looks good, plays good.

Getting better, but still not perfect
The only reason for the 3 star rating is the work it needed. A brand new instrument may need a setup, but it shouldn't need repairs. More details below, but lets start with what was really good. This "Inspired by Gibson" model has some awesome improvements over prior models. The Kalamazoo styled headstock is really nice. It still has the same challenges as the Gibson models, but it has a much more refined look than its predecessors. Same thing with the pick guard. These two improvements provide a far more polished look to the final product. These features may seem small to some, but I appreciate them. The higher grade pots also result in a more professional feel and tone for the player. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I prefer the pickups in this model over the T-Types found in the the Gibson model. They don't have the same note separation or clarity as the T-Type, but they do have a warmer jazzy tone that I prefer, so I'm going to keep the pickups. On the "still not perfect side" of the conversation, many of these will require some additional work to get it in playable condition. Some reviewers have reported that they were perfect right out of the box, so it may be a hit and miss situation, but mine was a bit of a miss. I knew the issues were fixable, so I purchased it anyway. The factory setup was quite poor. There was far too much neck relief and the bridge was way too high. This wasn't a matter of simply not being set up the way I like my guitars. When I picked it up off the display, this one was unplayable. After fixing the relief and action, I found 2 dead frets. Not a buzz because the action was too low, but two completely dead frets (without bending). A fret level and crown was needed. My biggest critique is the fret ends were so sharp that I literally cut my finger on one. That had to be fixed. I had a professional do the fret repars and a full setup. Now, it plays flawlessly. One day I may end up replacing the bridge and tailpiece. They are fairly low quality, but on par with comparable instruments in this class. If you can do these types of repairs yourself or don't mind spending a little extra to have them done by a professional, this is a good value for most players and I would recommend it to my friends.

I bought an Cherry Red Epi ES-335 Dot used from my local Guitar Center. I played it for a good long while and went back and forth on it. Mechanically it is very good, electronically pretty good, aesthetically it is beautiful and without a scratch. Though I would like to replace the PUPS, I use this guitar a lot and it has performed well. It has been a great Church guitar especially during the Christmas season.

Very comfortable neck, fret ends aren't sharp to the touch, stays in tune nicely, pickups, switch, and control knobs provide good tones, and I like the slim width of the body. Finish is the beautiful sunburst variety. Great guitar that won't break the bank.
Great, good-looking guitar

I like the thin profile of this semi-hollow body, and the shape of the neck makes it easier to play. The two standard pickups fit my needs and provide a nice range of tones. The tuner gears, the bridge, and the stoptail are all good, and overall it's a very handsome guitar.
I would buy this over and over

The guitar sounds so great, it pulls off a clean tone as well as a nice gainy/distorted tone so well. It's a wonderful guitar at that price point and would recommend it everyone I know!

Is there a place for a whammy bar?
No there isn't. You can add a whammy bar to an Epiphone ES-335, but it doesn’t come stock with one. The ES-335 has a stopbar tailpiece, so to install a whammy bar, you'd need to modify or replace that setup.submitted2 years ago

There isn't a recommended gig bag for this guitar but the Gibson ES-335 Modern Hardshell Case would be a good choice.submitted4 years ago
