Zildjian

collapse expand iconDescription

Developed in conjunction with leading drum stylist Akira Jimbo, the Zildjian K Kustom Hybrid Hi-Hat Top features an innovative brilliant/traditional surface that produces different tones depending on where the cymbal is played for a musical "darkness with brilliance" combination. The inner half features the unlathed, brilliant finish of the K Custom Ride, while the outer half features the traditionally finished K Zildjian lathing. The unlathed section helps control the wash and sustain, making it ideal for recording and live situations.

The innovative "Hybrid Hammering" on the hi-hat results in reverse Mastersound grooves by hammering into the bottom of the cymbal from the opposite side. This results in increased surface area contact between the top and bottom cymbals, and a warmer chick and wash than normal Mastersound hammering. Akira specified the 13-1/4" size to combine the power of a 14" size and the control of a 13".

"Maximum versatility is the main idea with the Hybrid series. I worked with Zildjian to design a line of cymbals where brilliance and darkness coexist. I think the sound we came up with sets the new standard for the 21st Century."--Akira Jimbo

Great sound, slightly fragile

I tried these out in the store and after the first hit I loved them. Very crisp sound, both closed, and slightly open. My only problem with them is that after a year and a half of regular play (2 hours of band practice twice a week, I'm in two bands, with gigs about 2 times a month) the top cymbal had two fractures in it and had to be replaced. I probably won't replace it, but buy a new set of something else. I gave it 3 stars because I love them, but they should have lasted longer.

I so enjoy the slap sound of doing open and closings on these Hi Hats. The shimmer ring gives a solid sound when playing funk style music.

These HiHat Cymbals are outrageous. All other K Custom Hybrid Cymbals are already way out of the ordinary. But the 13.25" size in combination with its other design features makes it truly unique. I am happy to own three finely matches pairs of these fantastic HiHats, which I use in various combinations on my set and which complement my way of playing in a perfect way. :-))

Note to myself. Never order based on customer reviews. Just received these Hi-hats and will be returning them. Not at all what I expected based on the reviews. I've been a professional musician for over thirty years (not bar bands or church gigs).

  • Only hi hats you'll ever need.

I own these and they do everything. If mine ever get damaged I will be at the music store buying another pair of 14" K Custom Hybrids. No doubt in my mind, I don't need or want anything else. They have a great versatile design.

  • Good for studio work and live gigs

How would you guys feel if I got a Hybrid Bottom with say a "New Beat" top? Would the bottom be too large? Just give me your opinions on this idea in general

    Open Reply - Gear Head
The bottom would be 1/2" off as these come in 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 sizes whereas new beat is 14" or 13". We do not recommend this.
