Yamaha

collapse expand iconDescription

Yamaha reface keyboards are designed around the practical needs of contemporary musicians. The name of the series, "reface," is a conflation of the idea of reimagining and the legacy of Yamaha's many groundbreaking keyboard instrument interfaces. Among the innovations that it hearkens back to are the legendary CP80, DX7 and CS5 keyboards. This is the reface YC, which has as one of its chief orientations the authentic organ timbres from the Yamaha Combo Organ.

The reface Series is small. Incredibly small. But unlike miniature keyboard instruments of the past, the reface touch is satisfying and expressive, and the sound is nothing short of spectacular. The reface family of keyboards features built-in speakers and is battery operable so you can create on the go. An aux line in allows you to play along with MP3 players or whatever other audio device you wish to use. Add MIDI and USB connectivity, and the reface's capacity to interface with external devices is vast.

Reface YC gives you the unique expression of drawbars, rotary speaker, percussion and effects for a complete organ experience that fits under your arm. Five different organ models take you from vintage tonewheel to transistor to classic Yamaha YC combo organ at the turn of a dial. Each organ model features unique percussion behavior plus distortion and reverb effects to get that perfect sound - just pick your model and start shaping your sound using the nine retro-style drawbars. Take your playing to the next level and plug in a Yamaha FC7 expression pedal for the total organ experience.

For keyboardists needing great organ sound you can carry under your arm, Reface YC is a Mobile Mini Keyboard with five unique organ characters and realistic organ control and behavior. Unlike expensive "clonewheel" organs, Reface YC features a complete organ interface you can hold in your hand and easily fits into your keyboard rig.

WebMIDI and the reface Keyboard

It had to happen, so it did. WebMIDI. And of course, Yamaha is one of the first to offer a way to use it. WebMIDI connects MIDI devices to the internet, allowing musical instruments to play online synthesizers, as well as save or share sounds. Reface Mobile Mini Keyboards can use WebMIDI to songs to YouTube (video) and SoundCloud (audio).

BROWSE shows all available sounds (currently thousands), and you can refine your searches using tags. Once you find a sound you like, click on it and hit SYNC. This will send the sound to your connected reface and show them you to move the controls on your keyboard to recreate the sound. How cool is that?

Beautifully crafted visually and sonically. Its portability and wide spectrum of combo organ sounds made it the perfect solution for all occasions. Breakout port makes it easy have access to all of the great sounds with a full size keyboard or your choice. Overall, this is a great keyboard with a lot of good options!

Cuts through very well. Killer sounds for the price and portability. If someone could come up with two-tiered stand that would hold two reface keyboards I'd buy the CS as well. I use a sheet music stand for one.

  • Size doesn't matter with this organ.

Was planning just to MIDI it up to my Roland VK-1, so I could play the transistor organ sounds with a full sized keyboard. Now it has turned my rig into a two manual organ setup instead. The micro-keys aren't really a problem for me. Playing in "V" mode really does gives you that Doors sound. Its distortion and reverb are better than on the VK-7. My only negatives on this are: Its edges and corners are way too angular to comfortably play in bed or while walking around. Rounded edges like on the very early Casio MT- series would've given it much better feel for that kind of play. The drawbars/sliders only go up to 6, and not 8 like on all the other drawbar organs, though I don't know if that would be a noticeable limitation. Bottom line; It is very addicting to play.

Most of my gigs don't give me room for my steel drums & Hammond SK-2/dual keyboard. This gives me the sound I want (plus Farfisa, Vox, great 60's organs) in a 4-lb. 22" package.

My dream has been to have a Hammond organ that is able to be taken and played anywhere. This is the one. In my experience it's the best tonewheel simulation Yamaha has offered to date. The drawbars appear to only have 6 detents instead of 8, but that isn't a limiting factor. The sound is 95% there, including the rotary sim. If the vibrato/chorus wasn't so cheesy I'd give it a 98%. The percussion kills the 1' drawbar just like the real thing, and the variable length slider offers more options than the original. The onboard reverb and distortion complement the overall sound, and the keys, while small, are indeed very playable. I haven't tried the other tone settings (V,F,A,and Y), and I'm sure they are as accurate as possible, but I wanted a Hammond sound I could gig with at any time and any place. The yc never leaves my side; if I;m stuck in traffic I play right along with all my organ tunes and this improves my technique since I can't look at the keyboard. The color doesn't detract since I'm also a Sweedish type of guy on portable keyboards, but the yc is a dream come true for me.
