The Yamaha THR5 combo amp packs in everything you need out of an off-stage amp. Developed by a team of guitarists in search of the ultimate tone, the THR5 combo delivers the sound you want and the feeling you need. Effects that enhance and complement your playing combine with room-filling reverbs and delays to push your playing to new levels. And thanks to THR's unique design and focus, stadium-filling volume isn't a pre-requisite - everything about this amp is designed to fit the way you play, right down to the need to keep it quiet sometimes. With tone and feel like this, you'll appreciate the ability to keep playing all night.

Most of THR's effects feature VCM (Virtual Circuitry Modeling) effects processors. Based on the technology used in Yamaha's professional audio mixers, VCM effects give unsurpassed realism and quality. VCM effects are capable of capturing subtleties that simple digital simulations cannot even approach, going beyond simple simulation and delivering the truly musical performance that makes classic analog gear invaluable even in today's digital production environment.

The THR5 was developed with Yamaha's award-winning AV division to offer true hi-fi stereo sound and a new experience in guitar amplifiers. The exclusive, specially designed speaker enclosure is optimized to handle both guitar and stereo playback sounds making it uniquely capable of giving you amazing tone for both your guitar and your track from a compact, portable amp.

The THR5 incorporates Yamaha's new Extended Stereo Technology to create an incredibly wide, spacious audio image. Stereo tracks and studio quality reverb take on a depth unimaginable from such a small enclosure. Also bundled with Cubase AI, Steinberg's professional music production application it offers full-fledged recording and editing. The THR Editor offers deep editing of amp and effect parameters using your computer. Additional in-depth controls include compressor and noise gate functions.

THR's design provides stereo playback from your smartphone or other device through its AUX jack or direct from your computer via the USB connection. The user memory function lets you save up to five amp settings of all controller and switch settings for quick recall. The tap tempo function allows you to quickly set delay time. A built-in chromatic tuner features accurate, stable tuning and an easy to read display.

Finally, the THR5's Virtual Tube Illumination includes a simulated orange tube glow from the metal speaker grille.

Comments about Yamaha THR5 Modeling Combo Amp:

I was looking for a small practice amp to leave around the living room that my wife wouldn't get flipped out over. I tried this thing out and it just blew me away. The thing is about the size and weight of a toaster and I don't recall ever hearing an amp with 4" speakers sound anywhere close to this. Normally speakers that small sound thin and break up easily but these sound real tight and clear. It costs more than other battery powered amps of this wattage but it's totally worth it because of all the features. It has a nice little array of amp models. You get some nice clean ones and some nice over-driven ones. You also get the delay and reverb settings to fiddle around with if you like that. What is also cool about this is that it has a usb out so you can use it as a guitar interface on your computer, comes with some software for that. For an amp that you're just gonna practice on I don't think you can ask for more.

Great sounding unit, but XP users beware...

from Phoenix, AZ

Comments about Yamaha THR5 Modeling Combo Amp:

Bought this unit to use mainly as a "coffee table" amp and music player. I like to kick back on the couch and noodle with my guitar while watching TV sometimes and this unit works great for that. Also sounds great playing a music player through it. The amp modeling is very good, the modulation effects are spot-on vintage sounding, and the delay/reverb effects are decent, accept for the HALL reverb which sounds HUGE and surrounding. I downloaded the driver and editor from the Yamaha site without trouble. HOWEVER... when I went to install the CUBASE AI software I find that it is NOT compatible with Windows XP, only Windows 7. While I already have CUBASE LE, I was looking forward to comparing it to AI. This is not a huge issue for me, but I'm sure it might be for other XP users who will be shortchanged by not being able to use this recording software. This is an excellent and unique product, but Yamaha and any retailers selling this should get the word out that CUBASE AI is not XP compatible.

Great sound and effects. Big but workable for air travel

Comments about Yamaha THR5 Modeling Combo Amp:

This was a gift for my son who will be on an Exchange program all next year and is taking this amp and a beater stratocaster knockoff. He loves the amp. The effects are surprisingly extensive (he really wanted reverb as well as delay), and according to him this is the least "digital-sounding" of the travel amps he tested (for comparison his "regular" amp is a Fender tweed Blues Deluxe tube amp with a suite of analog pedals), and sounds better than his solid-state Blackstar ID Core 20 practice amp (I don't see him using that much anymore unless he needs a louder second amp or wants to lend it to someone). The ability to plug in your phone and play along is key (no problem controlling the volume on the phone rather than the amp). He thinks it's the loudest of the travel amps he tried (I'm not sure he tried cranking all of them way up, though). He does not like "complicated" things and finds this one simple to use (I doubt he will ever use the USB interface). He plays jazz and rock. To my ear, this had the best "clean" sound of the amps he tried.

He compared all the amps on his short list (the best in each of their respective size categories, from smallest to largest) head-to-head: Blackstar Blackfly (sounds amazing for the size, but paled in comparison to the other two), Boss Katana Mini (in between the blackfly and the yamaha for size, a better "crunch" per me but not him, nice sound, simple controls, but lacks reverb. This might actually be my first choice for someone traveling abroad, pretty close in sound and volume, but he went for sound quality and fullness of effects over portability), and finally the Yamaha (the largest/heaviest - as big as you'd want to go for packing in your standard luggage for air travel). (He also tried an Orange Crush about the size of the Boss not surprisingly too "dirty" for him).

Thanks to GC he was able to try them all in the store and return this one if he didn't prefer it. But he did.
