great guitar! had mine for 5 years so far, stays in tune for months, its got some weight to it, very well balanced. I prefer this one over the 611 due to the unfinished neck with out gloss, its super smooth. pickups sound great frets are perfect locking tuners work well and like someone else said this thing sustains forever my only and one complaint is that the string spacing is a little tight ( but you get used to it) its not terrible also ive compared 2 of these 311's side by side and the weight's are not identical, probably depending on the slab of body wood being used, both had nice weight but one was a tad heavier. this is not your feather light guitar.

This guitar has left me dumbfounded. Right out of the box it was playable and the quality surprised me. The pickup heights need adjusting and the action is a little high for my taste but other than that it's a crazy guitar for the money. P90 is fat and warm, humbucker is twangy, and the coil tap is sparkly. The only problem is that the difference between the humbucker and tapped single coil is pretty small. You have to listen closely to discern a difference, at least at low volume. Other than those small things it's a guitar worth puting money into.

As with the cars or motorcycles - if you hesitate what to buy because lack of experience - buy Japanese brand - that is the golden middle. That guitar came out well set out of the box - i only had to adjust pick up height and changed strings - 09 Gage - not my thing. Everything about that guitar can be compared to Toyota vehicles - not as luxury, but reliable, solid and lasts long )

Can I install a whammy bar?

It would be work than it's worth; better to buy the guitar with a factory installed bar.
