Yamaha's Tech Talk: Introducing MODX+

Yamaha

Description

The Yamaha MODX6+ is the smallest and lightest keyboard in the MODX+ series. Designed for synth players, MODX6+ offers a wide range of sound design capabilities, thanks to its 8-operator, fully programmable FM-X engine with up to 128-note polyphony (double the original MODX). The MODX6+ features 61 semi-weighted, synth-action keys that are perfect for banging out blazing leads and solos. Like the rest of the MODX+ series, MODX6+ gets its power from the same technology found in the flagship MONTAGE keyboard, combining Yamaha’s AMW2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) technology, and the advanced synthesis capability of FM-X (Frequency Modulation). Together, these two iconic sound engines provide an impressive palette for playback and complex sound design. If you're looking for cutting-edge technology in a 5-octave synth, the Yamaha MODX6+ might be the perfect instrument for you.

Combine Samples and Synths

The MODX6+ sound is derived from the same technology powering the flagship MONTAGE—Yamaha’s AWM2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) sample-based engine and the FM-X (Frequency Modulation) synth architecture. This unique mixture results in stunning emulative acoustic instruments, synthesized sounds, drums and more. AWM2 technology allows for a large amount of data compression without sacrificing sound quality, resulting in unparalleled, realistic sound reproduction. On the other hand, the FM-X engine is a highly sophisticated form of synthesis capable of producing awe-inspiring sounds with remarkable dynamic range and unprecedented power and fidelity. Together, AWM2 and FM-X give you the ability to create an impressive array of sounds that have never been heard before.

Add Movement to Your Sound

The real performance power of the MODX6+ series comes from its Motion Control technology, putting rhythmic and dynamic control at your fingertips for a unique, personalized sound. The Super Knob allows simultaneous control of up to 128 parameters in a single Performance. This means you can control nearly anything from mix functions like volume, pan and effect sends to detailed synth parameters like filters, LFOs and operators. Motion Sequences are tempo-synchronized, completely customizable control sequences that can be assigned to virtually any synthesizer parameter and provide incredible new ways of creating sound.

Ready for the Road

Taking a page from the MONTAGE series, MODX6+ keyboards have an extraordinary amount of power and features, but the difference is in its form. MODX6+ has a modern design that’s considerably lighter, making transport easier and load-in a breeze. If you’re looking for a lightweight keyboard that can travel easy, but you’re not willing to sacrifice sound and performance features, then MODX6+ is the right keyboard for you. Let MODX6+ empower your creativity and inspire your music.

Fantastic addition to any synth lovers arsenal.

I'll start by saying I'm a diehard Roland fan with a side-love for Native Instruments sounds, and in my 30+ years buying and playing synths of all kinds, I've somehow never owned a Yahama. I actually went into my local Guitar Center to pick up a Korg something-or-another and got to playing the MODX6+, having no idea what it was or what it was capable of. Within 5 minutes I knew I was going to walk out with my own. This thing produces some of the most unique sounds you didn't know you needed. Not only that, it's pretty good at traditional sample-based sounds as well (though not up to par with what Roland offers). All of that and some great drums, sampling capability and a pretty competent sequencer round out what I think is one of the best synths of the past decade. If you're sitting on the fence, I recommend checking it out. My ONLY complaint? I didn't care for the feel of the MODX8+ weighted keys, so I opted for the 6. Your mileage may vary but I find Yamaha's weighted keys to be almost TOO weighted.

Not What I Expected

First impression were the videos I saw on Guitar Center. The sound engine was very impressive; triggering the purchase. However; once in my possession I learned that most of the sounds/tones are really patches comprising various sounds/tones. Me using my MPC as the centerpiece of my studio; I couldn't easily find an answer anywhere how to trigger the sounds collectively ie: channel 1 would only trigger one tone in the patch. After about a week of not being able to figure this out I just returned it to Guitar Center as the sounds weren't as impressive on their own. For a live musician; I could see this shining though.

The "ultimate" tool for many keyboard players: light enough to take anywhere, powerful enough to be the centerpiece of their setup for years.

I love this synth. I haven't regretted it one bit yet. Love how simple it is to get around it. Being able to layer sounds as well without having to use a DAW is perfect for me. Great for a beginner and more. Absolutely love it. #SWEEPSTAKES

Packed full of sounds and many performances. The addition of DX7 extended is really nice as I purchased and still own the original! Being disabled, the light weight MODX+ will allow me to get out to play - vs. my MOTIF es8 - Beautiful keyboard but too heavy for me to haul anymore. Lots to learn. Wish this was available back in the 1980s when I was a serious music student. Will update review after I have a few months with the MODX+

  • Superb sound device, but why not invest more in interface?

As I anticipated in the headline I am completely enthusiast of the possibilities of MODX+, but I was not so happy of the device interface. The available presets are delicious to hear, fully configurable and can offer everything I can desire (I am basically a classical music composer), but interface is difficult to approach. Before MODX+ I was a MOX user. MOX is a simpler machine, but it was supplied with a powerful windows interface very effective and able to fully configure the MOX by the computer keyboard. Why nothing similar has been made for the far most sophisticated MODX+ (and Montage of course). The touch interface on the MODX+ is rough, with very few pressure points that are not correctly aligned with the icons and anything but intuitive. I was forced to buy a touch pen to try to improve the interaction (why not supply the pen with the keyboard?) and anyway light years far from the powerful efficiency of the MOX windows interface. So please I beg yamaha to solve this problem because MODX+ (and Montage) are full worth of it.

First impression of the keynboard, Its packed with awesome sounds and the layering is awesome and applicable to the work I do. There are literally only two problems for me. I 1. I wish I had an assignable output 2. after about 4 voices the polyphony gets wonky Other than that its great for everything I do. and I am a Reggae musician #sweepstakes
