I store rep gave me a call and insisted I come down to check out a new Yamaha he just received, and said I might want to hurry as its getting a lot of attention. I asked him to put it aside and made my way down to the store. First thing I noticed about the guitar was how strikingly beautiful the instrument was. Every inch of the guitar was hand-crafted by Yamaha's top Luthiers. Alll hand-made with immaculate fit and finish. Ive purchased a few guitars from the same rep HD-28 Z, Taylor 50th Anniversary 814ce Builders', and a Martin SC-28E. So having some reference to well-built guitars gave me a much deeper sense of awe and appreciation for the FG9. First play was sonically unlike the aforementioned guitars, with the feel of the instrument being incredibly comfortable and the sound being incredibly balanced and pure. Id never heard a guitar played so wonderfully before and was instantly sold. I had the choice of acoustic only, or with electronics, with the options of either mahogany back and sides or rosewood. I finally decided on the electric-acoustic rosewood model. Ive had it about a month now and it only get better everytime I reach for it. All my quitars hang on my wall and 9-10 times I sit to play I now reach for the Yamaha. Funny side bit, a friend was over and commented on my wall of guitars and after playing a few of them, I saved the Yamaha for last. My friend was seriously shocked when I told him that the FG9 was made by Yamaha as he had no idea Yamaha even made guitars. I laughed and just smiled. Feels like being in a very special elite club of sorts. If your looking for something in the Dreadnought line, you'd be missing out if you didn't give the FG9 a test drive. Next on the list will be a J-45, but it will be hard not to compare anything else from now on to the FG9.
