Yamaha FG Red Label Demo | FG5

Timeless design with modern inspiration
Yamaha’s “Red Label” Folk Guitar series was first launched in 1966 as their first production of steel-string acoustics, which is considered by many as the iconic Yamaha acoustic line. Yamaha’s new Red Label series retains the vintage aesthetic of the original ’60s models—with a semi-gloss finish, open-gear tuners, the original V-shaped headstock with the time-honored "tuning fork" logo and, of course, the red label inside—but uses everything Yamaha has refined and developed over their more than half-century of making acoustic guitars.New scalloped bracing
Yamaha guitars are well known for their balanced sound. However, when defining the voice of Red Label, Yamaha wanted to add more low end for a fuller, warmer tone that would be ideal for solo singer-songwriters and modern folk music. To achieve this, new bracing designs were developed for the FG and FS Red Label guitars, which are optimized for each body shape and the natural characteristics of the tonewoods. The new scalloped bracing delivers plenty of volume and enhances low-frequency response without compromising durability.Acoustic Resonance Enhancement (A.R.E)
As tonewoods age, they vibrate more freely and become more resonant, producing a louder, more powerful sound with enhanced high-frequency response and more sustain in the lows and low-mids. Yamaha’s Acoustic Resonance Enhancement (A.R.E.) process achieves those same characteristics by using heat, humidity and pressure to simulate the effects of time on the soundboards. The A.R.E. process of accelerating the aging of the wood gives Red Label models the same rich, vintage-quality tone and response of a guitar you’ve been playing for years.

Very Impressive!
I have played guitar for 50 years and owned many fine instruments; I currently own four Martins. This is the first upper level Yamaha I've seen "in person" and I was curious. I have to say that, other than a similar appearance, this is an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT ANIMAL from the lower level Yamaha acoustic guitars. These are made in the Yamaha Custom Shop in Hammamatsu, Japan, and are all-solid-wood and crafted to a very high standard from the best materials. The sound is crisp, rich, and deep. I think this guitar is very close to Martin's newer D-18 (one of my all-time favorites) at HALF the price! Unfortunately these are very seldom in stock but, with GC's generous return policy, it's well worth the risk.

Finish quality lacking
Read/watched amazing reviews on this guitar which, along with the price, was the reason I purchased this model. Guitar sounds great but the construction quality was not as high as I believed it to be. Matte finish was very roughly done throughout (buff marks visible everywhere when held to light) and the action was very high for a not-quite-but-almost premium guitar. Returned almost immediately. Other than those issues, sound was great.

I have never written a review on any of my guitars. I was looking at getting another brand, but saw this guitar and played it. I was shocked by what I was playing and decided to purchase the FG5. This is my go to guitar now. It not only plays great, but looks great as well. The craftsmanship is second to none. I have a Martin and I like this just as much or a little better than my Martin HD28. If you are thinking about getting this guitar, don't wait. It will surprise you how much you will like it. Thanks Yamaha for the beautiful guitar and thanks to your skilled craftsman for their excellent craftsmanship. Just a masterpiece.
Its the sound that matters.

I own nine guitars including two Martins, two Taylor`s and a Gallagher. If I could only keep one guitar to play it would be my FG5. Its all about the quality of the sound, this guitar makes and it is phenomenal, That`s the best word I know to describe it. It puts guitars that cost twice as much to shame. I cant wait to get home in the evening to hear it`s beautiful voice.Thank you Yamaha for such a wonderful instrument.

I bought a Yamaha SA2200 instead of a Gibson 335 based on reviews I read. When I got that guitar, I was so impressed I decided to buy a Yamha acoustic. The FG5 is very well made, sounds great and (admittedly after some tweaking) is the best playing acoustic guitar I have ever owned. I am really impressed by the FG5. Yamaha is really doing something right.

As a singer songwriter and recording artist, I use this guitar for just about everything from playing with friends to writing songs. The instrument has a superb balance across the strings, with a mellow low end and a sweet top end, sounds great when strummed or finger picked. Yamaha have this sorted! When plugged in thru anything it sounds fab, there's no nasally sound sometimes associated with acoustics when plugged in. It's an absolute delight to play with a magnetism that makes you not want to put it down. Love it 👍

Choosing a guitar is a personal thing. There are so many things to consider, and no one can really tell you which one is right for you. I suggest trying out as many guitars as you can. In my case, I tried dozens of different guitars. I can say that after trying many guitars, I knew that the Yamaha FG5 is the right Guitar for me. Although the FG5 is a handsome guitar, it is rather plain and without many adornments. It reminds me of a favorite sweater. I like that it is an understated Guitar. The construction quality is excellent. The ebony fingerboard and frets are very well finished. The tone of the guitar is full and balanced regardless of the string or chord that is played. Tone is clear and even, without sounding strident or shrill, while delivering a full spectrum of sound. My FG5 is probably the last acoustic guitar I will buy. It is so satisfying to play, and so capable of doing anything I want it to do. I trust it like an old friend!

This guitar sounds beautiful and looks very cool. It also plays well lower on the neck. However, the guitar came with action above the recommended level. After lowering the action to the recommended heights, there is very little height left on the saddle. I worry that in the future the action will rise, and there will be no way to lower the action that isn't expensive and invasive. I am also unable to lower the action a bit more, which I would prefer.
