Authentic to the touch
A weighted action with heavier touch in the low end and lighter touch in the high end effectively replicates the characteristics of an acoustic piano. Great for the aspiring pianist, practicing on the GHS action builds the proper finger technique for when the time comes to perform on an instrument with hammers and strings. You can select touch sensitivity from 3 types - hard, medium, or soft - depending on your finger strength or playing style.
Smooth, continuous pedaling
Continuous or half-damper pedal control provides the same detailed nuance and subtlety experienced when pedaling on a grand piano. This is done by allowing continuously increasing amounts of note sustain, from slight to full, as you depress the sustain pedal deeper.
True sound that resonates
Damper Resonance digitally reproduces the sympathetic interaction between strings on acoustic pianos. When the damper pedal is used in a performance, the harmonics of other strings wash over the notes you play until the pedal is released.
Connect and interact with your instrument
New to this model line, the Yamaha Smart Pianist App operates seamlessly with the YDP-144, opening up a wealth of material. In addition to selecting piano Voices, you can use the Layer function to overlay Voices, or the Split function to play different Voices with the left and right hands, all from the convenience of your phone. Transpose, Tuning, Pedal and acoustic settings can all be configured from the touch screen. Play along with your favorite songs by following the chords, and smart Pianist will analyze the songs in your music library and display the chord symbols so you can play along with your favorite tunes.
Capture your performance
The built-in, 2-track song recorder is a great way to capture a performance and play it back to hear your progress. You can also record the right and left hands separately for hands-separate practicing at any tempo you're comfortable with. Now you can practice one hand, while song recorder plays the other.
Discover an inspiring combination
Combine two Voices together, like piano and strings, for an inspiring new playing experience. Nothing livens up piano practice like playing a piece with a different sound, and combining two sounds together takes that creativity a step further.
A piano with its own repertoire
50 classic piano songs are provided in the built-in song memory and also as a music book, "50 Greats for the Piano." Learn how to play these pieces at your own pace either one hand at a time or at a reduced tempo. Or just listen to the songs as background music.
The power to play more
Provides enough horsepower for dropout-free performances even while layering two Voices and playing two-handed, sustained chords with heavy pedaling. So as you become a more advanced player, your digital piano can respond to your skill level.

Excellent purchase
This is a great digital piano. It looks very nice and well made, it sounds nice, the keys are sensitive and weighted. I've had this piano over 6 months and play on it everyday and I truly think it's beautiful and sounds great. I'm still a beginner, so I don't have a lot of experience with other brands or pianos, but my instructor is a professional pianist who has been playing since age 6 (and his mom is also a professional classical musician), and he thinks this is a really good piano too. You do have to set it up against a wall though, because the back of the piano has a thin piece of wood and screws go in there, etc. But nobody sees that if you place it against a wall. Not really a con, but this isn't a portable digital piano. It is heavy (although light compared to other Arius models), so it is not only an instrument but also a piece of furniture.

Didn't expect problems so soon.
Pros: Purchased this piano in June 2019 for a little over $1000 after taxes. It was delivered safely and in a timely manner. For the price, I was extremely please with the look and feel of the piano. The sound is fantastic and the weighted keys help to build finger strength which is great for beginner. While it does have some "bells and whistles" with preset songs, voice settings, Metronome and tuning settings it is a simple piano perfect for those who are just starting to play, don't wish to travel with the piano and may not want to compose songs with added effects. Cons: When first opened I noticed 2 of the keys higher up on the keyboard were rubbing. I didn't mind as I am not playing too many songs that require me to hit those higher notes. However, I have been playing this piano ~10min - 30min every day since purchase. Now, 2 months in, I have keys near the center of the keyboard rubbing when being played which creates an awful scratching noise. I don't hammer the keys when playing and keep the piano covered when not used. I contacted Yamaha (as it's still under warranty) to help remedy this and their response was to take it to your local dealer. I now need to remove the top part of this standup piano and make a 2 hour round trip to fix a new piano with < 3 months use. I understand it's not a 10k piano, but I expected better quality and attention to detail given the price and brand. Overall, it really is a beautiful great sounding piano. Just a shame it started to have problems so soon.

Solid keyboard for the price range. Weighted keys a positive factor in determining whether to purchase or not. I hope #sweepstakes is a winner for me!

Overall, the piano is excellent. Great touch feel on the keys, and the sound is very realistic. Yet, there is one, big glaring issue, enough to knock a couple stars off of the rating. The 'user interface' for the piano is virtually non-existent. There are only two options, neither of which is acceptable. Both require downloading and installing an 'app'. That alone is enough to know that it's not going to be a good user experience. The choice is either a lousy, overpriced Apple iPad or a limited selection of Android phones. Why no web interface? Or a Windows- or Linux-compatible application? Or even a broader selection of Android devices as a last resort? Really a shame for an otherwise excellent digital piano.
I would buy it again

At 72 years of age, I use the Yamaha to keep my fingers limber for the occasional times I'm asked to play somewhere, and to work on new arrangements when hearing something. "new".

What is the difference between this piano and the Yamaha YDP-164 Arius Traditional Console Digital Piano?
The chief improvements are upgraded piano samples (CFX Concert Grand relative to CF) and compatibility with the new Smart Pianist app. Other improvements include an increased polyphony (192 versus 128), and Yamaha’s GH3 (Graded Hammer) action, which features synthetic ebony and ivory keytops for an authentic grand piano feel. In its output stage, Yamaha has perfected a Stereophonic Optimizer, which spreads the sound out into an absolutely charming stereo field.submitted6 years ago
