apx 5a good first choice
I've had the guitar for about 3 years. I paid $499 and they've dropped the price and added a tuner. The better my playing gets the more I like it. If I had a choice now I'd say the Taylor Bib Baby sounds better acoustically, but has no pickup. Overall you'd be smart to have this as your first purchase. Immediately change the action (height of strings about the fret board) and replace the strings with super slinkies (softer to push them down). For a beginner, I had a tough time learning on this guitar right out of the box. It's like night and day after modifying the guitar. Don't be afraid to change it.

Errrr....
This guitar isn't worth the price, I should rather have bought the black Ibanez AEG10E. The Yamaha APX500 is made of cheap wood, that's a first, which accounts for mediocre sound quality and low durability. I had the guitar for two years now, and the bridge is pulling the face of the body up, causing the strings to untune itself halfway through each song and it can no longer sustain a note. I never exposed the APX500 to extreme temperatures or humidity levels. Also, the APX500 only has a 1/4 output, while the Ibanez AEG10E has both the 1/4 and XLR output. I like the quality of the wood on the fret, but the wood inside the guitar is disappointing. Also, the guitar attracts a lot of dust and fingerprints. The only good thing about the guitar is the fact that it has an onboard tuner and it's aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Other than this, it's not worth buying.

I got this guitar a little over a year ago wanting a middle line acoustic, for 300$ was amazing deal the thin body gives great tone and quality, there was no problems with the frets or anything, it plays smooth and sounds that way, neck is great to work around, its always in tune and the harmonics sound clear unlike lots of other guitars, the cutaway lets you reach up pretty far and still get great sound. 5/5 if you dont wanna spend a lot but want a great acoustic get this i got blue burst apparently but its a gorgeous greenish tint.

I bought this guitar based on its five star rating, and now I see why its five star rated. I have never played a guitar in this price range that has the sound this guitar puts out when amplified. Its body is actually smaller than a full size but larger than a 3/4. It plays slightly quieter than a full size when not amplified but still allows for a very nice sound. The only problem I have with this guitar is that when you put new strings on, the tuner doesn't want to pick up the sound unless you finger pick, but after about 10 min worth of playing it started working fine. This guitar is great and well worth the money and will work wonders for someone that feels crowded by a full size or just wants to something they can be in full control of. The action was set up perfect for playing bar chords or high notes. Overall great value and this is one guitar I will definatley keep around for a long time.

Having owned an Ovation electro-acoustic for almost 20 years, it was time for a change. I looked at most everything available, but really wanted a thin bodied guitar. I was a little embarrassed to pick an "economy" guitar, but have no regrets whatsoever. The guys at Guitar Center put a set of Elixer extra light strings on it and lowered the action just a bit. This thin plays well, and sounds great amplified or not. The built in tuner and preamp are a real plus. I like everything about it. Great guitar at a low price. Recommend to anyone!

I have an acoustic limited addition "The Gibson" that's a 3/4 body. Have had it for years and love it but the action is high and though I've played for years, I'm no Segovia! But I do love to play and this year bit the bullet and went in search of an acoustic/electric...having owned a Guild years ago and recently been reintroduced to the electric by my son who recently bought a Ibanez. As a woman, I was looking for something that would be comfortable -easily held and worked. I was, at first, thrown off by the make having grown up to think of Yamaha as more second rate -but, truth be told, this guitar is simply wonderful! The action is low allowing me to bar chords that have always been difficult for me. It is sweet to play and the tone is lovely and rich! I read one of the reviews that had a negative comment on the strings but I have had no problem - if fact, not only is it easy to tune but living in a home heated with a wood stove, it stays in tune with only minor adjustments needed. I really love this guitar...from its looks to its sound quality. -A final note (no pun intended!) -my son is an accomplished guitarist/musician. He showed up the other day and played my guitar. He was as impressed as I have been on the quality of this instrument...to the point of seriously considering purchasing one as well!

I bought this yamaha version about 3 years ago. I liked it because it had low action and a crisp sound. Apparently it is has warped now because all the frets around 12 are dying. For the last year I havent been able to get a very annoying buzzing sound to stop when I hit low E. I have taken good care of it, so I know it's not me (on the stand at all times other than in my hands.) I would definitely spend the extra money on a taylor or martin, etc.
