VHT

Description

With its additional preamp gain stage, amazing variable Watts control, unique Depth control and tube-driven effects loop, the new high-gain Special 6 Ultra combo amp rockets the popular Special 6 platform to the next level.

The Special 6 Ultra combo's added gain stage provides plenty of overdrive for searing leads, bone-crushing crunch, and gristly grind, while its amazingly effective variable Watts control can reduce the volume to whisper-quiet bedroom practice levels-while maintaining the same overdriven tone, texture and dynamic feel.

The Special 6 Ultra combo features the same unique Volume and Tone controls as the original Special 6, the same footswitchable Boost, High/Low Power switch, and a similarly mod-friendly eyelet board. In addition, the Special 6 Ultra features a unique multi-position Depth control that fine-tunes the low-frequency depth; this feature allows you to carefully voice the amp's low-end to perfectly suit a wide range of guitars, pickups, speakers, and musical styles.

The Special 6 Ultra combo ships with a 6V6 output tube for sweet clean and rich overdrive tones, and to accommodate tone-seeking experimenters, it can accept a wide range of alternate output tubes as well. The Special 6 Ultra combo also features an all-tube buffered effects loop, and is loaded with a 12" VHT ChromeBack speaker.

I bought this amp based on it's features, reviews, and it's manageable size. I previously owned a Blues Jr which was great as well, but I like how this amp breaks up sooner, has great tone and more flexibility. As far as cleans go, this amp compares favorably, I'd say 90% as pleasing as my Blues Jr or Vox AC10, and that is close enough for me. However, this one has more useable gain and a great price. I don't use tons or Reverb, but it would be nice if the VHT had it.

My first tube amp purchase is the VHT special 6 ultra. I knew I wanted a practice size tube amp, and bought this based on price point, positive reviews, and ability to modify features. I was not able to play it before buying, but guitar center's awesome return policy makes it risk free. I can say that the amp definitely has a "dark" tone to it. I have a Les Paul, which is an inherently dark guitar, due to the humbuckers. At first, I struggled to find a tone I was completely satisfied with. Internet forums suggest tube swaps, or possibly speaker changes to brighten the tone. This is easily done with this amp. I was considering these options, when I happened upon another key to unlocking this sweet little amp's potential. I purchased a Maxon OD808 overdrive pedal. Ran it into the front of the amp, and the tone control allows me to brighten the tone perfectly. Like I stated, there are other possible solutions to the tone issue. If you are considering this amp, you should know about this characteristic of the amp, especially if you have a humbucker type guitar. But don't take this a negative, there are great tones to be enjoyed here. The clean channel is very articulate, and touch sensitive. The amp appears to be very well made, and feels high quality. I do not know how loud it can get (yet), but it is plenty loud. Definitely not only a bedroom amp. Lots of features make it a great value. It's a keeper!

Bought this for home use as a pedal platform amp and in that capacity, it's really a nice little amp and surprisingly loud for 6 watts, although much more past 12:00 and it breaks up, but in a cool Princeton way.

  • Great sounding tube amp.

I replaced a solid state, modeling amp with the Special 6 Ultra, and I couldn't be happier. I did add an older Pod to the effects loop, which works great. My use is for in home, individual practice.

This is a really great hand wired amp. you can modify it to your liking by changing the wiring and adding tubes. It sounds amazing stock though.

Upgraded from a Fender Mustang IIIv2 to the VHT Special 6 Ultra. Still have stock tubes and the difference is amazing! VERY loud amp for home use. Great clean headroom for pedals and with the Ultra channel, you can get plenty of gain. Effects loop sounds great too. Would definitely recommend this amp!

What big name amp brand is this comparable to? I.E Marshal, vox, or fender? A lot of reviews mention clean tone but don't explain the voicing. If you couldn't the amp you wanted what would the VHT replace?

This will be comparable to a Vox amp

Yes. You just have to make sure the headphones either have the 1/4" input or get a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter.
