The 6176 can be seen in almost any serious studio and is used on bass, bass drums, snare (defacto), vocals (Adele), keyboards, guitar cabinets (Van Halen), etc. It can also be split to use just the preamp or the compressor which is a nice feature.

This piece of gear is set up so conveniently. You can run the pre and the 1176 either in sequence or independently, so you never have to worry that you'll darken a sound too much that you just want through the compressor. The 610 pre is quite dark, but with good mic's and a good converter, you can still capture textures in the low end with a lot of clarity. The 1176 side of it is, of course, always a winner and has a well-deserved reputation as a go to compressor.
