Any sound engineer or producer who works with audio signal processing hardware and software has likely heard of Universal Audio. For more than 50 years they have been an industry leader in DSP audio modeling and vintage analog technology. Universal Audio was the first company to use artificial reverberation, a recording console and multi-band audio equalizers in commercial recordings.
In 1958 Universal Audio was formed in Chicago by Bill Putnam Sr., a sound engineer and studio designer who had worked with such legends as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Ray Charles. Universal Audio developed ground breaking products such as the LA-2A compressor and the 610 tub mic preamp which has been used to record artists from the Beach Boys to Van Halen. In 1999, the company was re-vamped by Putman's two sons and merged with King of Loud Technologies. Their goals are to "faithfully reproduce classic analog recording equipment"; and to "design new digital recording tools in with the sound and spirit of vintage analog technology". They continue to launch new technologies in the form of DSP cards, analog hardware and audio UAD powered plug-ins for music production.
Today Universal Audio provides a number of high-tech options for anyone in the sound manipulation field. If you require a distortion-free preamp and optical compressor to track vocals, try the Universal Audio LA-610 Mk II Classic Tube Recording Channel with advanced features like improved output features and larger metering. If you're looking for the warmth and distinctive tone on a classic analog device with all the modern conveniences of today's technologies, try the Universal Audio 6176 Channel Strip. This compressor creates a single-channel signal path for vocals and equipment alike.
Universal Audio continues to be industry leaders in innovation and technology while faithfully continuing the legacy started by Bill Putnam over 50 years ago. These innovative devices are a truly a must-have addition to any advanced studio set-up.
