Trophy

Description

The Bodhran is the traditional Celtic drum that provides the vital pulse of Celtic music even in modern times. The Grover-Trophy bodhran stays true to the time-honored build. It is played with a double beater that allows one hand to produce complex rhythms, while the other hand adds tonal expression by muting or applying tension to the inside surface of the head.

Nice starter drum

I like this drum for the price and size - it's a good starter, and for someone who wants to try this out. Give good sound. My only complaint is that usually different items like this come with some paperwork - even to tell you how to hold it- and this one came with nothing. Internet search necessary. The second thing is that I really don't like the beater. There are different styles, and I would have liked to have had the more common (from what I have seen not he internet) that is more like a stick. I found that a new pencil worked better than the beater that came with it. Just my opinion - might not be yours!

Nice Bodhran, Terrible Beater

Good construction and quality. Don't think the cross-bracing in the back is needed for a Bodhran this small, makes it awkward to hold and move the hand no matter how it is positioned. The beater is pathetic, too short and thin to hold/use effectively. Accept the fact you'll need to buy a different beater.

1st drum received had blue and pink stains on head plus on long inch wide by 12 inch long brown stain on head. Instead of returning right away I contacted support and we agreed I'd purchase a second one and choose between the two. Second one came with only a slight brown stain on the head. I don't know, maybe it was from the color of the goat that the skin came from because there is still some hair at the end of the streak. So over all, not being a dedicated/experienced Bodhran drummer I'm very pleased with the overall construction of the drum and its sound. The customer services provided by Musician's Friend were great. If I'd received the second drum with my first order maybe would have given 5 stars. First drum was only worth 3 stars so I settled on 4 stars overall. Customer service would be ranked 5 stars but this review is for the product not the services..

Sure, it's made in Pakistan, the finish is a bit rough but it plays great. If this is your first bodhran, it will more than suit your needs. The goatskin came perfectly stretched and in perfect tune. Some don't like the crossbar but you get used to it, just find a spot where it fits and quit complaining! The tipper is a little shorter than I'd prefer but it is light and well balanced. With 15% off for the holidays, I paid a hair over $30 for the 18" shipped, leaves plenty of money for other toys! You can graduate from this to a tuneable drum when you turn pro, until then, have fun and don't worry aboot dropping this one after a night out and a few pints of Guinness with yer mates!
