Taylor

Description

There's something undeniably inviting about the Taylor GS Mini's scaled-down size, yet a single strum reveals the impressive voice of a full-size guitar. That mix of portability and musicality has proven to be a winning combination that fits into so many scenarios in life, from the couch to the campfire to the concert hall. It's not too big, it's not too precious, and it's not too expensive. That broad-based accessibility has given it a resounding universal appeal, not to mention a built-in fun factor.

The shorter 23-1/2-inch scale length makes forming chords a breeze yet gives the instrument plenty of snap and tuning stability for a rewarding playing experience. All GS-Mini models include a durable hard bag built by Taylor for the optimal fit.

Tone Woods
A guitar's top is the primary filter and distributor of vibrating string energy through the guitar, which means it has a huge impact on its sound. Sitka spruce is the most prevalent guitar top wood of the modern era. It blends stiffness and elasticity in just the right proportions which translates into broad dynamic range with crisp articulation. Layered rosewood back and sides offer robust rosewood tone with low-end fullness and high-end sparkle.

The arched back of the guitar generates more sound from a small-bodied instrument, and using layered wood back and sides create a sturdy yet receptive platform for the vibrating string energy sent by the guitar's top. Layered wood is also less susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity, making it an excellent choice for players who travel with their instruments or simply require more durability.

The small scale takes getting use to, but I'm loving getting use to it. This guitar rings on the high tones. Feels great and fun to play.

  • Magnificent sound for this mini beast!

I bought this as a travel guitar. I've had others, Martin Backpacker, Applause Travel, whose sound was flat. I'd compare my prior experience with small travel guitars as sounding like a cigar box guitar. The GS Mini is unlike those. It has a great sound, when I pluck, I can feel the vibrations against my abdomen and chest - this is always a good sign. The scale is a bit short and bit cramped up around the 9th fret and beyond, barre chords are problematic after the 8th fret for my hands. I expect that from a small guitar. The sound is big across all strings. The Taylor gig bag is high quality and very protective. I would buy this again and again.

I recently rekindle my enjoyment for guitar playing after several years of not playing any instrument and I just discovered this amazing little guitar that makes playing so much fun. For me it's all about playing in the porch or the backyard by the fireplace with my family as audience and this a perfect guitar for that and so much more.

It sounds good and feels good. My complaints are just minor and are related to the body. The neck feel great. I can see the pencil marks used to line up the label. There is excessive joint filler around the neck joint. The sanding around where the binding would be on the back has a defect that I can feel but it doesn't look too bad. Just don't like the way it feels. It was sanded too deeply in one spot. For the price, these defects just seem sloppy to me. Not a deal breaker but disappointing.

What strings does it come with? I'm not sure if it says anywhere when you buy it or if anyone just knows. I was thinking about buying some Elixr acoustic strings with it but if it comes with strings that are really good or are already Elixr then I wouldn't have to spend the +$30.
