collapse expand iconDescription

The Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. StingRay bass guitar brings you the iconic body lines and styling of the classic Music Man StingRay bass. With its familiar teardrop pickguard and sleek profile, the S.U.B. StingRay instantly stands out on stage. Under the hood, a powerful humbucking pickup and active 9V preamp equip the S.U.B. StingRay with articulate, thunderous tone. Dial in the perfect sound with dedicated volume, bass boost/cut and treble boost/cut controls. Intonate each string precisely with the fully adjustable heavy-duty bridge. The S.U.B. StingRay's high-quality components and road-ready construction provide reliable performance gig after gig.

Classic Teardrop Pickguard Evokes Iconic StingRay Style

The S.U.B. StingRay bass features the iconic teardrop pickguard that has defined StingRay basses since the 1970s. Combined with the sleek double-cutaway body, the unmistakable pickguard makes a bold stylistic statement on stage. The S.U.B. StingRay comes in a variety of eye-catching finishes, allowing you to choose the look that best fits your musical identity.

Capture Deep Lows With the Humbucking Pickup

The S.U.B. StingRay is equipped with a single powerful humbucking pickup that accurately reproduces the entire frequency range of the bass. Compared to single-coil pickups, the humbucking design dramatically reduces unwanted noise and hum, letting your bass tones shine through the mix. The pickup excellently captures deep low end as well as punchy mids and smooth highs. It provides the ideal sonic foundation for the onboard active preamp.

Shape Your Sound With the Active Preamp

The 9V active preamp lets you dial in your ideal tone with dedicated bass, midrange and treble controls. Boost low-end thump and attack, add bite and cut to the mids and adjust high-end clarity to suit your needs. The Volume control sets your overall output level. Whether you want a smooth, warm vintage tone or an aggressive modern slap sound, the preamp equips you with the tonal control you need.

Precisely Adjust Intonation With the Bridge

The S.U.B. StingRay features a sturdy, fully adjustable bridge with heavy-duty saddles. The bridge enables precise adjustment of each string's intonation so every note rings true up and down the neck. The individual saddles also let you customize string height and action to match your playing style. Combined with quality tuning machines, the solid bridge stabilizes tuning stability for reliable performance.

Great bass and quality for under $300??

About a month ago I went to my local Guitar Center to sell a bass cabinet I didn't really need. I planned to take the cash and leave, but being a bassist I found myself standing in front of the bass wall. I believe you have to play an instrument unplugged to really hear it's voice. I sat down and played most of what they had in the store and hung all of them back up unimpressed. Either they had some quality issues from the factory (sorry Fender) or they needed some set up help. I've owned a lot of basses and have only kept my favorites. I have high standards. I own a Squire bass which I love, also made in Indonesia. I do think you can get an inexpensive instrument and get it to sound and play like it isn't with some modifications. That brought me to the Sterling Ray4. I've never owned a MM Stingray or copy but have always been interested in them. First impression was "this thing is built like a tank". A little heavier then what I was used to but the build quality was excellent. No fit or finish issues and the neck and fret work felt great. It had a really nice sound acoustically. Understanding that factory set up specs are really just a starting point and are meant to be forgiving of climate changes so the instrument will sound decent when played (and the reason many were put back on the wall) I knew it could be even better. I didn't need another bass, but after my cabinet trade offer and 10% off the Sterling… I walked out with the bass and $90 cash. I put new strings on it (45-105 Slinky's), set the neck relief where it should be (factory sends it with extra relief to prevent fret buzz or dead spots). I lowered the action which I was able to get lower then any other bass I own (again great neck), and I lowered the pickup height a little. I had read reviews that the pickup output is a little hot, and it's true. I just played it for about an hour and put it down saying "I can't believe how awesome this bass is." Under $300? This ones a keeper…

Great starter bass. Needs setup off the bat.

I have the walnut version. The bass feels solid. Electronics work fine. The nut was shaped perfect. This was a pleasant surprise considering the price range. Pickups sound good. The tuners are good. The frets were perfect. The only downfall is the bridge. The saddles have to move towards the neck ALOT. The low E string saddle is barely hanging on to the saddle screw after intonation was set. The bridge could've been set closer towards neck at the factory. This is a common problem with entry level instruments. The bridges are set too far. Other than this issue, this bass plays really well! It thumps!

I mainly play a Jazz Bass with rounds and have a Squire 50s P Bass with rounds. I have my Sterling set up with flats. I play with a pick and the Sterling sounds great with flats. This is a good budget bass to have and try it out with flats. I feel like if the J and P had a child it would become the Stingray with flats.

Purchased this as a birthday gift. Upon the initial tuning 2 of the strings snapped as they were not installed correctly. They must be inserted into the center of the tuning pegs and NOT wrapped around sticking out (which is how it comes when unboxed). I wish the strings had come separately to self install to avoid such damage and further expense. Very disappointed.

Sounds and plays like a bass 2-3 times the price. Came set up well out of the box with a nice low action and minimal fret buzz, intonation was more than good enough to play on. I ended up raising the action a little bit since it would buzz when I tuned down even a half step. The pickup is pretty hot out of the box, ended up lowering it to compensate. Pickup is also a little noisy as far as background noise and hum is concerned. Before adjusting the pickup height, I'd say the noise was worse than the "noiseless" single coils on my American made Fender Jazz Bass, but after adjusting, they're about the same. Did some recording with it, pickup was definitely a little too hot out of the box, but after adjusting it was fine. Pickup should be good enough for most players, but for serious gigging or recording, that would be the first thing I'd upgrade. The neck is fast and comfortable to play, and the body is well balanced and ergonomically shaped for both playing while sitting and while standing with a strap. Tuners are cheap feeling, but do their job and I haven't had issues with tuning stability thus far. You can tell by looking that most of the components are cheap, but everything you actually touch while playing feels more than up to the task. Volume and tone controls are solid feeling. Volume pot seemed like more of an on/off switch at first, but it's better after lowering the pickup. Tone controls have a nice detent in the middle, and offer a surprising range of tonal options for just one pickup. You aren't going to make it sound like a P bass or J bass, but it does sound like a stingray, so mission accomplished there. TLDR: great value for money, plays well out of the box and even better after a setup, built to a price, but a fantastic starting point.

I plan on using this product for live performances. The band I'm in currently plays 70's and 80's classic rock.
