Description
Squier's Classic Vibe Bass VI brings producers and adventurous bass players a vintage-inspired instrument primed to explore new creative ground. This throwback model is a faithful tribute to Fender's iconic baritone bass first introduced in 1961. Tuned an octave lower than a guitar, the Bass VI delivers a rich tone suited for everything from surf rock to shoegaze. Its slim, fast maple neck and 9.5" radius Indian laurel fingerboard provide a familiar feel for guitarists, while three Fender-designed alnico single-coil pickups unleash a range of sounds with the flip of a switch. Anchored by a vintage-style bridge and floating vibrato tailpiece, this bass covers basslines and lead parts with equal aplomb. Slick nickel-plated hardware and a vintage-tinted neck finish complete the retro vibe of this secret weapon.
Three Pickups, Endless Tonal Possibilities
The Bass VI's trio of Fender-designed alnico single-coil pickups can be used individually or in combination to craft your perfect tone. Activate the neck pickup alone for a warm, rounded bass tone. Engauge the bridge pickup for a brighter, more articulate attack. Blend the middle pickup into the mix to add clarity and cut. A two-position "strangle" switch cuts bass frequencies for a more guitar-like tone when desired.
Vibrato Tailpiece Adds Expressiveness
A vintage-style vibrato tailpiece gives players control over subtle pitch variations. Add a shimmering quality to sustained notes or a warbling effect reminiscent of a tape machine. The vibrato works in tandem with the Bass VI's floating bridge to provide a smooth, responsive playing feel.
Comfortably Navigates Multiple Musical Roles
The Bass VI transitions seamlessly between rhythm and lead. Its shorter 30" scale length and lighter bass strings make fretting and bending notes easier for guitarists and bassists alike. Chords ring out clearly with piano-like richness. Melodic lines can explore the upper reaches of the fingerboard without a struggle. Whether riffing, strumming full chords, or improvising solos, this adaptable instrument inspires new creativity at every turn.

I'm impressed.
I've wanted one of these since my college roommate snagged a MIJ reissue at a pawnshop. I'm a guitar player who needed a bass for creativity and recording and this seemed like my best option. After reading up on this instrument, I concluded that it was essentially a boat. (i.e., buy it, but expect to spend a lot of cash to make it nice) Given that I headed to GC with the intention to get a MIM Jazz Bass. To my surprise there was a Squire VI on the wall and the the craftsmanship and factory setup was exceedingly better than the Jazz Bass I went to purchase. Specifically the fretwork and neck. I'm still shocked as I'm writing this. Here are a couple things to note for anyone that has read prior reviews. The Classic Vibe version being sold now has a new bridge that solves the intonation issues found on the Vintage Modified version. Mine stays in tune and intonates properly with little fuss. **The Strings** (Reason for 4 Stars) The low E that ships with this is incorrect. It's a .085 and just flops around uselessly. The original Fender spec calls for a .095 so order a new set of strings and this won't be an issue. Future upgrades. It's a Squire so don't expect the world from the electronics Right now the pickups are good enough for me, but the jack, wiring, pots, caps, and switches are pretty bad. Again, this is to be expected with an instrument at this price point. I'm in the process of figuring out the pots and caps I want and will replace them in the near future. That said, for most players this should be a low priority until something breaks. I'm thrilled I was able to get this and look forward to many years of fun and creativity. If you can find one and it fits your needs, I say get it.

I really wanted to love it.
As it arrived the action began was fine but the intonation on the low E was a full semitone sharp at the 12th fret. There wasn't anywhere enough room on the bridge to correct it. I tried to return it for a different bass but I was told the reward credits I had used as part of the purchase were one time use only and I really wouldn't have much of my funds back to purchase a different bass. Lesson learned make sure you only spend reward credits on things you can test in store before buying. Since they wouldn't take it back, I tried figuring out how to make it work. I got done Bella flat sounds, I flipped the bridge, I.tried shimming the neck to change the break angle. Everything short of a new bridge which I guess is my next stop. I'm disappointed in Squire and GC as a result of this purchase. Total bummer.

Second time I've gotten a screwed up offset from GC. Don't buy 'open box'. Evidently, that means screwed up electronics. So, more replacement of switches just to make it work.
Plays great after some work

I love the flexibility of the Bass VI. Being able to intersperse bass lines with more guitar oriented lines is great!

Hard to tune. You need a chromatic tuner as you will tune an octave down from EADGBE. Great piece!
Amazing Sound! Amazing Versatility!

I'd been toying with the idea of a short-scale 6-string bass for quite some time. I finally pulled the trigger, and am I glad I did! This thing sounds amazing! I had to put on new strings (the Fenders that come with it are not great for this guitar - too loose, creates buzzing and lacks clarity). I put some LaBella 767-6F flatwounds (.95-.26) on it, and it came alive! The tone is unbelievable. I got it for the versatility, but now - wow! I can't describe the improvement in tone over my Gibson and Fender basses. I played it in rehearsal last night, and everyone in the band was blown away. The short scale takes a little getting used to, but by the end of rehearsal it was fantastic! I normally play with fingers only, but I'm going to try a pick tonight. The strings are a little lighter and closer together, so I think that will help with articulation. A minor downside: It seriously needs a good setup. After the new strings, I needed to adjust the neck (of course, since they are heavier strings) and the intonation, which was not good out of the box, was definitely worse. You don't need a luthier for these adjustments. If you don't know how, you really should learn! Now it plays great, and I am really, really happy with this guitar.

I'm an intermediate guitar player who records and does all my own setups and intermediate mods to guitars. Pros: good sound, all electronics work, feels more like a guitar than a bass to me, overall good build with caveats. Cons: frets are sharp- i'll need to file all of them (that's a lot of time). input jack is loose. i don't mean the nut; a brand new fender 1/4 cable wiggles in the jack. fits all my other guitars snugly. totally inadequate low E string. i changed just that string to a .100 diameter fender and it's fine now. other notes: intonates fine. i don't like the bridge but the very large strings seem to hold it way better than on a jazzmaster or jaguar. overall i like the guitar and hope to get some good early 80s alternative sounds from it but i would only recommend as a 3rd or 4th if you're set for guitars already (or bass guitars if that's your thing). too specialized for a primary guitar for most people, imo.
