Awesome!

By Axe2Grind

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

Wow, I installed this thing in my Fender HSS and this pickup rocks! The out put is just enough, but not crazy and over the top. The tone is nice and thick, harmonics are awesome, and the sustain seems to go on forever. I own a Les Paul, Ibanez, and Fender and two have Duncan pickups, and one DiMarzio(Ibanez). It's just an opinion, but I think Duncan makes the best PUP's out there. DiMarzios are quite good, but I plan on putting Duncans in that Ibanez soon! The Alnico Pro II's in my LP are just as awesome as this SH-5. Way to go Duncan, you guys builq awesome stuff!! Thanks!!

This pickup is thick !!

By RockinforGod

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

Bought the Duncan Custom to replace the weak stock pickup in my Washburn (wi-64). Needless to say, the sound is very thick, it is everything you think it is. I even get a very good clean sound out of it. It cuts through the mix very well, make my guitar sound as good as just about anybody.

Brilliant pickup.

By khawaja Jodat

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

I bought it in 1985 & got it fixed at the bridge position of my Yamaha Studio Lord SL400S (Les Paul copy 1980). After replaceng it with the stock Yamaha pickup I noticed a remarkable change in the overall sound quality of my guitar. The sound became very much pronounced, punchier and penetrating. I got its wiring arranged in the Parallel/Series manner by drilling a hole near the guitar pots cavity area & installed a small toggle switch. In the Series mode its gives elevated midrange boost perfect for solo with lot of sustain and punchier chord work as well. In parrallel mode its sound becomes more clear and bright with a little decrease in power and I again found it very useful for both solo and chord works if you need more presence and crispy bright sound. This pickup has a cermaic magnet and so its sound is not that warm and creamy as compare to Alnico magnet but it is not harsh & I find it very impressive for any style of playing. Its works very well with any amp at clean or dirty sound settings and especially do wonders with the overdrive and distortion effect pedals.

Balance

By anonymous

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

This pickup is all about balance. I installed it in my PRS Artist III and wow. All frequencies are perfectly. The highs are very distinct with balanced presence without being harsh in the slightest. Mids have all the punch that they should. The bass is very defined and clear. The bass frequencies truly come through while maintaining clarity and focus. This pickup will let you do whatever you want.

Very pleased!

By Nathan

from Denver, CO

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

I installed a pair of these in the bridge position of a Schecter Tempest Custom and I am very pleased with the results. I mainly play progressive styles of metal and this pickup has just the right amount of gain to where its got a good kick, but isnt overbearing and muddy. I have some SH-6 Distortions in another guitar of mine, but it was a bit much so I went down to the SH-5 and found exactly what I was looking for.

GREAT FOR ANYTHING

By Cody Richardson

from Brighton, TN

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

I can honestly say, it sounds amazing. I own an Ibanez SZR720. The stock pickups just weren't cutting it, so i put this in the bridge! This added just the right amount of punch without sacraficing a nice clean sound. It really has amazing tone! Its a nice mixture of Bass, mids, and highs all together, with a main focus on the mids and highs but still no sacrifice in bass for those metal riffs. In detail, the lead channel is tight with definition in every string in each chord. Depending on the amp and distortion you use, it gives you a great heavy rock to metal sound. For the clean, it doesnt really distort or give you too much crunch. It's actually pretty clean. Coil-split its good for country, otherwise, its good for anything. Its really a great pickup all around, you wont be dissappointed no matter what you put it in! The SH-5 sounds amazing ANYWHERE in ANYTHING! I highly suggest it to anyone!

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

Definitely a huge upgrade from the stock pick ups on my PRS S2. I paired these with the 59 neck and they are a perfect setup for me. From Tesla, to Journey, to Metallica they work well! No regrets. I'm so glad I only kept the stock S2 pickups in for a few weeks. It's like night and day much better sound and sustain.

    just what I expected

    By Ian Maynard

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

I installed this pup into the bridge position of my 77 les paul. Although the guitar already sounded great, it just was missing something, a little more edge. This pup gave it exactly what I was looking for. And, ordering online saved the hassle and flood of arrogant attidudes when shopping at my local G.C. All in all, the pickup is great, and the online service is just as good. Shopping in person, not so good.

Would give it 4.5 if I could

    By Andrew Meyer

    from Oak Lawn, IL

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

I'm just gonna start by saying this is a pretty nice pickup. Seems very well built, and was definitely an improvement over the stock pickups in my Epiphone. I'll admit the improvement wasn't as great as I had hoped though, reading all the 5 star reviews this has gotten. I did a side by side comparison between this and the stock pickup (recorded with a Zoom H2). The most noticeable difference with the SH-5 was a slight volume increase and a slightly stronger midrange. Didn't really "bring my guitar to life," if you know what I mean. Of course I'm guessing part of the problem is Epiphone's cheap electronics.

    Great pickup!

    By MAURCIO LOPES

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

I put a SH-5 on my Mexican strat and it sounds super hot! I love it. It sounds better then the "so famous" JB (which I have on my Les Paul). If you want some fat hard rock sounds, that's the pickup to buy it!

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

Amazing cleans, great distorted tones, great for any type of rock music (probably not good for extreme music. Had a blend knob installed instead of the coil-tap, glad i did it sounds great half rolled off instead of taken all the way out.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

I purchased an SH-1 and found it to be lacking that edge I was looking for to accompany my new Marshall dsl 40cr. The SH-6 I think would be too much (i had a duncan design Korean sh-6) so i went with this paf on steroids with a small ceramic magnet. Me personally i love it. But with that said it doesn't have a lot of low end. It's on the thin side, but there's no mud and that is what I've been fighting with my old duncan designed sh-6. But the sh-1 didn't have the aggressive metal edge. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Additionally i broke traditional rules and i flipped the sh-1 and put it in the neck slot. So far I like that.

PAF with just a little more

    About Me Experienced

    Pros

    • Fat and punchy
    • Tight

    Cons

      Best Uses

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

I'd say it has about as much power as the JB but with a much different tone profile. The JB has an emphasis on the upper mids which gives it a searing sharp cutting sound. Sometimes too sharp and too icy. If you're looking for a PAF with more under the hood this pickup is for you. It's tighter and chunkier in the low end (no flub). A lot of metal players use this pickup because it's got enough power to handle lots of gain but remains clear and punchy. Sounds good over driven and clean. Smooth treble response with a scooped tone profile. Great all arounder. It'll handle what ever you throw at it and has become one of my favorites. I put it in my SG because the Gibson pickup lacked power and clarity but I still wanted that classic rock sound when I needed it. Now my SG can handle all styles with ease. Well worth it.

My Japanese Strat sounded like a Music Man Axis

        By Victor Scherrer

        About Me Experienced

        Pros

        • Bright tones, not shrill or harsh
        • Good Quality
        • Tight and pronounced low end
        • Works well with splitted coils

        Cons

        • It's hard to match with softer pickups

        Best Uses

        • Matches with basswood bodies
        • Pop, blues, rock, hard rock, fusion

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

A guitar tech recommended to install a SH-5 in my old Japanese Fender Stratocaster 10 years ago and it was a pleasant surprise. I got round drive sounds (think EVH or Steve Lukather distortions), keeping a full clean with a bright beautiful tone and without extra mids. Also, I was able to kept some strat tones splitting that pickup.

My only concern: as long as I had one SD Vintage Rails in the neck, it took me some time to adjust and get used to their different outputs, even lowering the pickup height.

Despite that point, that's an awesome and versatile pickup. I don't like to use lots of gain and, trust me, SH-5 isn't only for metal guys.

        Good with a cleaner amp

        By Jason Tanner

        from Syracuse, NY

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

I wanted to get more saturation out of my 6505+ for lead playing. My friends worned me that my amp might be to strong for the pickup on the lead channel. I put it in my Gibson SG 61' reissue. Well, they were 100 % correct. I use a noise suppressor (G string) and even with the pickup volume down to 6, which is the lowest I can go without sacrificing tone, and the amp volume down to 1, it squeels for a second when I stop playing! That is with the G string on at half way!!! AND, i set the height of the pickup very low. Its sunk into the guitar!!! HOWEVER, I will say on my crunch channel it works beautifully. It breaks up when I dig in and doesn't squeel or feedback the way it does with high gain the high gain channel. AND, with my Blues Jr. it is awesome! Very responsive. good for rock and blues. But I was looking for a heavey high gain sound with this guitar. Oh well, Im gonna swap it into my epiphone and put the 59' humbuckers back in...

        Great improvement!!

        By Daniel Delgado

        from TX

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Guitar Pickup:

I bought the SH-5 Custom to replace the stock Alnico II humbuckers I had on my Epiphone Firebird Studio hoping for something hot with lots of gain and power, and this pickup delivers! I got it open without the nickel plate covering and there is no hum and it doesn't pick up any extra sounds that much, so I would recommend going for those if you prefer a brighter sound over appearance. The original Alnico pickups on my Firebird had absolutely no sustain or gain whatsoever, and the sh-5 was the perfect solution. Notes and chords will ring for just about as long as you hold them, making pinch harmonics sound amazing. I like to play with lots of distortion, and this pickup is good for that. Palm-muting sounds nice and deep with the sh-5, and open notes and chords sound clear and distinct. Although the SH-5 is very hot and has the perfect tone for the kind of music I like to play, I still feel that it could have even more gain and an even hotter sound overall, which is why I rated it 4 stars. Next time, I will probably go for the SH-8 Invader or Hot Rails instead as I've heard that these are hotter than the Custom. This pickup works just fine tho if you're looking for something with lots of distortion and high energy such as punk, hardcore or metal (which are the styles that I like to play) and I'm sure that buying a better amp with higher gain and distortion will make it sound just perfect! Nonetheless, I am very pleased with this purchase and plan on keeping it forever.
