Roland DJ-808 DJ Controller

Description
The DJ-808 is a state-of-the-art DJ controller with a 4-channel mixer, built-in drum sequencing, vocal processing, and the deepest Serato DJ integration available. It is the ultimate contemporary tool for the professional mobile DJ playing the swankiest private events, the club DJ doing innovative mixing and production, or the touring artist who fills soccer stadiums.
The DJ-808 is perhaps better thought of as an instrument than it is a piece of hardware. Roland is uniquely positioned to provide the included “TR-S” drum machine in this mixer design, having been the developer of some of the most iconic percussion sounds in the history of electronic music making. The DJ-808 can even control the Serato Sampler within Serato DJ. Additionally, the VT Voice Transformer can pitch your voice to match the key of your Serato DJ tracks, and two AIRA Link ports let you connect compatible devices to produce a live remix with a simple USB cable.
World-Class Software and Hardware
The DJ-808 combines the power of Serato DJ software with the precise engineering of Roland hardware. This incredible tool is a reflection of combined expertise that gives today’s producers and DJs a state-of-the-art tool with innovative features that opens up a new world of creative options on stage and in the studio.
TR Sounds and Sequencing
From the toothy chomp of the TR-909's unmistakable hi-hats to the long-tail boom of the TR-808, Roland TR drum machines are the very spine of entire genres of dance music. With the DJ-808, you can customize your beats in real time and the built-in TR drum machine stays in perfect sync with Serato DJ. Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Hi-Hats and Clap from the TR-808, TR-909, TR-707, and TR-606 drum machines aren’t just an incredible added feature; they are an integrated tool set for limitless creativity. These sounds faithfully replicate music history’s most influential rhythm boxes. You get all the thump and sizzle of the classic instruments with dedicated knobs to control tuning, attack, and decay, a new tweak on legendary sounds.
Serato DJ Control
In addition to its peerless function as a mixer and rhythm composer, the Roland DJ-808 takes full advantage of everything Serato DJ has to offer as well. Built-in DVS support (with the purchase of a Serato DVS license), dedicated loop control buttons, controls for Serato Flip, HOT CUE, FX, even Key Sync are all here. Key Sync and Loop functions earn dedicated sections, a design decision you’ll definitely agree with. You can now quickly adjust the key or shift the loop for a particular deck. Smart. Likewise, the design of every pad, slider and button has performance as its chief driving precept. The workflow feels familiar, yet new and exciting.
High-Performance Platters
The large, high-quality platters feel great and have the lowest latency of any DJ controller available. Tactile conviviality has always been a driver in Roland design concepts. From their mesh electronic drum heads to their innovative touch screens, Roland has always understood that the actual touch connection a musician has with an instrument is married to its aesthetic power. A DJ is intimately involved with his or her equipment, and the build and response quality are evident the moment you put your hands on the DJ-808. You get tight control over your music with super-fast scratches and cuts. Your technique will improve. It will operate at a higher level. You will take risks. You will pull it off. You will triumph over evil. The durable and responsive platters have integrated displays that clearly show playback status so you’re always in control. You can even control two decks simultaneously from a single platter with dual deck mode.
Connecting on Stage and in the Studio
If you are a producer, a DJ, or both, the built-in connectivity for synths, turntables, microphones and more allows the DJ-808 to take your craft to a new level. Two AIRA link USB ports let you easily connect compatible instruments and effects with a single USB cable. Trigger synchronized keyboard arpeggios or play live bass lines, leads and sound effects. One connection is all you need to infuse your productions with exciting musical elements that sync to your Serato DJ tracks. The list of what you can do goes on and on, and much of that list hasn’t even been written (that's where you come in).
Voice Transformer
Features, features, features. And all of them integrated into a single musical whole. Not only does the DJ-808 have a high quality mic input with an XLR combo jack, it also has a dedicated vocal processor, the VT Voice Transformer that can drastically transform your voice. Knobs for EQ, Pitch and Formant make dramatic vocal effects easy, and the ducking capability will automatically adjust the volume when speaking or singing into the mic. Become a robot. Become an alien trying to escape a trashcan. Become ten feet tall. The VT’s Auto Pitch function will even re-pitch the incoming signal to match the key of your Serato DJ tracks.
Rugged Build Quality
Roland has a long history of making rock-solid, reliable instruments with performance in mind. The DJ-808 is a continuation of that tradition and culture of manufacturing. Smooth, intuitive knobs and faders, adjustable curves, removable crossfader and touch-sensitive RGB buttons for HOT CUE, ROLL, SAMPLER, SLICER, PITCH PLAY and TR drum machine triggering. It’s classic Roland and blazing innovation at the same time. Again, it’s an instrument, not a piece of hardware.
Equipped with both 1/8” (3.5mm) and 1/4” (6.35mm) headphones jacks, combo XLR input jacks, built-in phono pre-amp, solid build quality, and audiophile sound quality—it is one of the most thoughtfully designed DJ controller ever built.

My humble opinion
I have been using controllers since the dj-sx came out. I have owned one dj-sx and two dj-sz's. I love the sz and use it to this day. I use serato at the clubs. And I use Ableton at home to jam out. I saw the ad for the 808 and preordered it. I first used it on a Friday night in a dark club booth.it was very difficult using the controller because I kept reaching for the sz layout. But after a few days it was difficult using the sz layout. The platters are about the same size as the sx platters. I have not gotten a case for it yet so I carry t around in the box t came in. When pulling it out by the front edge and grabbing on both sees of the center styrofoam packing material the upper case and bottom case seem to feel like it is gonna crack. So grab it on the ends by the handle like depressions. They feel more sturdy. (I will buy a case as soon as they are in the store.) The drum section is fun and can be synced to either deck. Just be sure your beat grids are accurate and the drummer is right on. You can assign Serato's sampler to the drum sequencer. The sampler in Serato needs to be more editable. Meaning that you can stretch the sample and crop it before dropping it in the sequencer. You have a few parameter adjustments like tone attack volume and another. The voice changer is fun and useful. The one thing that makes this a good controller is the sound quality. It sounds a lot better than my sz. A LOT BETTER than my SZ. Sadly you have limited configurations when using it as a sound card. You cannot assign outputs to pre fader channels like the SZ.im hoping a future update will change that because this controller would be awesome in a studio with ableton. I often use the extreme pitch on my SZ along with pitch and time to do insane transitions. Sadly the 808 only has 8%. Boo!!! That is the main reason that I do not gig with it every night as well as not having a case. I'm still learning things about the controller but overall I love it and would recommend it .

Disappointed & Dissatisfied! $1600 used not new, broken unit
I was excited about getting this new unit due to the fact that I have sent my DDJ-SX2 in for repair and they returned it to me in the same condition it was sent. So, I had my local store look into my options. They stated they had a DJ-808 in stock, but it could not be found. They then called Tampa, and confirmed that they had a new unit sealed and in stock. Ordered the unit on Sunday, Monday rolls around and I notice there is something wrong with shipping. Tuesday, no tracking information. Wednesday I see it left Florida, and it has now past the day i was supposed to receive the unit. Thursday I go to my local store, and request my new controller. So the short, buffed, brotha brings out a box that appears to have been thrown around by UPS, knowing the box is dented, he stands it up on it's side, and you guessed it, the box falls over. No respect for a users new controller! So I open the damaged box in store to find that the Roland box is scratched up! This can only mean my new unit is a used unit. Unboxing the Roland box I see the unit has scratches, and sticky stuff all over it, so I step back and state "this was supposed to be a new item and it's used"! My local store staff is now looking like we just crushed this guys dreams. Yeap, I'm upset, and now we are waiting on a call back from Roland to see if they are shipping 13 new ones to the chain of stores. One of the local guys called and got all kinds of back talk from one of his peers at another store! The rep on the other end of the phone stated that I got a good deal, and to run with it! It gets worse! I took the unit home because I have some shows to play this weekend. After downloading and installing drivers on my Mac, the unit never showed the platters. I then updated the Serato software to 2.2.0. Still no luck. I then tried on a PC, windows 10 unit using the Beta software. I was able to see platters, but no sound is coming out. The Master and track meters would not light up. I was sold a used broken unit!

Has so many features but some basic features sometimes freeze up. Dragging tracks to set up next track and every now and again a quick pause. You get that look from everyone like what happened? That was my biggest issue.

I' M THE DJ THAT SCRATCHES, BLENDS, AND MAKES MUSIC THAT WILL MOVE YOU. In the world of DJ'ing you are the one that moves the crowd whether in the club, car, home or remote island. As one the DJ's that used all DJ equipment from Clubman, (SHOUT OUT TO DJ BOHANNON AND DJ BIRDY BIRD for use of their turntables back in the 80's ) Gemini, Numark, Urei, Vestax, Rane and Pioneer Mixers alongside turntables. The 1980's was the breaking ground for many of us DJ's that added Synths and Drum machines to their DJ systems, Roland laid the pathway with the iconic Tr 808 and Tr 909 which unarguably are heard on 95% of every Hip Hop to Club hit records from Mantronik, Teddy Riley, Jermaine Dupri and so many others. Now in modern day with Serato being the foundation for digital DJ'ing and Roland being the foundation for "THAT" DRUM SOUND. The meeting and combination of both companies is a dream come true. The Roland DJ 808 IS THAT CONTROLLER !!! It brings out creativity that if you have the skill you will Master Your Mix ! And yes the pitch range does have +/-50%. I recommend purchasing the DVS upgrade if you feel that whole club mix on 4 deck feel.
