D'Addario Core: How to Choose a Drum Stick by Genre

Description
The Promark Japanese White Oak 5A Drum Sticks are crafted for drummers seeking a balanced stick for all-around use. Made from dense, hardy Japanese white oak, these drumsticks provide a sturdy feel and crisp articulation on cymbals. Promark's exclusive Millennium II manufacturing process and hand-finishing ensure maximum strength and playability in each pair. Whether you're a beginner or seasoned professional, the 5A is designed to deliver on stage or in the studio.
Hardy Japanese White Oak Construction
Grown in Japan's mountainous regions, Japanese white oak is a dense, durable wood that resists chipping and wearing down. Promark selects only the highest quality oak to handcraft the 5A Drum Sticks, resulting in a stick that can withstand heavy playing and last longer than most. The oak provides a solid feel and clear cymbal definition for articulate, resonant play.
Perfectly Balanced for Versatility
With a medium taper and tip, the 5A Drum Sticks have a balanced weight and length suitable for all music styles. The 5A's design provides enough reach and power for rock and pop, yet maintains sufficient control and finesse for jazz and other genres. Whether you're pounding out a driving backbeat or gently brushing a light rhythm, the 5A has you covered.
Millennium II Manufacturing for Strength
Promark's exclusive Millennium II manufacturing process and hand-finishing ensure maximum durability and playability. Each pair of 5A Drum Sticks undergoes a multi-step production method, starting with hand-selecting the highest quality wood. The sticks are then kiln-dried, shaped, sanded and coated with several layers of lacquer for protection. Every stick is hand-inspected to meet Promark's stringent quality standards before making its way to your drum kit.
A Drumstick for Every Player
From students to pros, Promark has a drumstick to suit any player. Whether you prefer the control of a 7A, the power of a 2B or the versatility of a 5A, Promark uses only the best materials and craftsmanship. Japanese Oak or Bust!
I've always been a big fan of pro-mark products. I use the nylon tipped 747 Rock sticks for most of my drumming needs. I had bought a set of the Japanese White Oak's and was very impressed, but when I went back to get more, all they had was American Hickory. I'm not a hard hitter, but the angle that I hit my hi-hats tend to chip and eat away my sticks. I broke three sets of the American Hickory sticks in one month, my Japanese Oaks have been going strong for 3-4 months. If you want a high quality stick that is not only going to last a long time, but sound great time and time again, go with the Japanese Oak.

After 10+ years using promark, I'm considering switching
I've been playing promark 5a oak nylon tips exclusively for maybe 15 years or so. Lately, I've noticed that they don't come "matched." That is to say, each stick has a slightly different fundamental pitch which in turn means rolls that don't sound as smooth as they could. For me, these are at a premium price point so the manufacturer should go through the effort of matching the pares. Isn't they why the come in sleeves of 2? Other than the tone matching issue, the sticks are great. The have a feel that I love. The oak is a little heavier than the hickory, which I like. Even with the increased weight of oak, I'm able to exercise good dynamic control. If you use push/pull or Moeller technique, your playing may benifit from the increased weight of oak. After using literally 1000's of pairs of these, I've only had the nylon tip fail once and those were well used sticks. The oak is stronger that hickory from a durability standpoint. The denser wood of oak also means a higher fundamental pitch, especially on cymbals. I hope that Promark gets themselves together with regards to the tone matching because otherwise, I've grown to really love these sticks for their feel and durability.

These sticks are slightly more flexible when when you play clean on the kit, and you can feel the harmonic difference when rolling through the toms. The balance of the stick is really only suitable for matched play, however. Jazz/marching tones on these sticks with the way their balanced, they feel completely different/unique to other wood tips I've played in the past, requiring me to adjust with future practice.

Professional musician for 4+ decades. Thrifty about spending a premium for sticks. Used a gift certificate to purchase a 3 pack of these oak sticks. Yes, they are pricier than most any other sticks; but found them to be what the other reviews have stated. These sticks can take a beating like no other wood stick I have tried in the past. Well worth the investment for the most basic of tools of a drummer.
