PreSonus

collapse expand iconDescription

The PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp features 4 headphone outputs on the front panel, each with its own volume, and 150mW of amplification per channel-extremely loud output with a low -98dB noise floor. It also allows control over control room monitors with a separate volume knob that can be muted using the Monitor Mute button. 1/3 rackspace. Accepts balanced/unbalanced inputs and outputs (1/4" TRS). Input can either be set to stereo or mono (the mono selector button on the front channel simply copies both inputs to both sides). Powered by an external wall-mounted supply.

The HP4 represents a tremendous value as echoed by this email received by PreSonus:

"To my amazement, your HP4 sounded as good as both of my hi-fi stereo heaphone amps. Very very clean and loud. I can't believe you put 150 mw per channel, @52 ohms, to four headphone outputs and offer such a quality unit for very little over $100." (M. Burke via email)

Headphone Amp

This little unit works great for home studios. I don't have a "control room", so I don't want the mics picking up the monitors. With this headphone amp, the musicians can record while listening to the mix through headphones and each can have their own level. Sound quality is good, and this thing can get LOUD. Great buy!

Got Smoke?

If you are into gear that spontaneously combusts after a little bit of light use, this is the product for you. I have had this less than a year and today after about a 2 hour session my monitors starting making noises similar to a dubstep song and then the HP4 started smoking. I only used this as a monitor controller for the most part, now I get to see if PreSonus is going to replace it. It is pretty cheaply made and even with the volume turned all the way off there was still bleed over that could be heard on the monitor. Save your money, unless you need something that would be good to start a fire with.

Presonus makes a great and rugged product. Yes, it costs 4-5x more than the swarm of inexpensive headset amps. But you can say goodbye to failure, grounding hums, and not enough volume, or bad sound at high volume. How much is your peace of mind worth, anyway?

  • Works very well in my booth. Loud and clear.

This unit powers my in-booth headset. During a remote session, I need to be able to clearly hear the director in my headset. This allows clear sound to come through.

  • Perfect for studio work.

I use this for my studio. With this I can record live drums from the drum room, live scratch track vocals as well as guitar in the live room and bass in the control room. With good closed headphones, everyone can hear what they need and that is a first for live recording in a few small rooms. It's so refreshing to play drums and hear everything you need, including vocals, bass and guitar while recording all of them live. Seriously, I can actually play through a miked marshall stack and sing in the same room and get a great scratch track for vocals. Watch your performance and recordings improve when you actually can hear everything clearly. (of course, you redo vocal recording to get rid of guitar bleed from amp 5 feet away). But don't expect this or any unit to work if you don't have decent headphones. Get Vic Firth headphones as they cut almost all background out. Yes, they are for drums but work great for recording. Need to get some amp feedback for that wild guitar track? A good set of headphones and this unit and the sound is clear and every instrument is in your ear mix better than that stoned sound dude will ever mix at the bar. The set up is sweet as I run my powered KRK speakers and sub woofer through the unit. If I need to turn off the control room speakers and just run headphones, its an easy one-button solution. Also, the mono option is great to check phase issues in your mix so its really more than just a headphone mixer. This is loud enough for any band and clean enough to forget you just damaged your ears so be careful.

  • Very good purchase!

I have checked this against my Apollo quad headphone jack individually and it does a fantastic job and I have high quality equipment..... I though I may have to take it back before opening after reading some other reviewers reviews but was happy after hearing and comparing , I'm sure it may not compare to $700 headphone preamps but it does the job well for the price..... and yes it does have an off and on switch!

I have a P1, but being a in ear monitor amp, it had issues with the limiter making the sound wave in and out. The Presonus has the biggest amp I could find within a budget. The guy that said his smoked must not of installed the rubber legs so it could get the air to the bottom vents. So if you need the extra power, this did the trick for my demanding of "extra power" style headphones. I mounted it my drum rack looks and sounds great. Don't send any more signal to the amp that you need to keep sound consistent.
