DDJ-400 Tutorials: Mixing with FX

DDJ-400 Tutorials: Long Mix with Loop

Description
Although the DDJ-400 is more portable than its larger siblings, it still enjoys the same familiar club-style layout you'd find on Pioneer's flagship controllers, media players and mixers. Everything is exactly where it should be, from the onboard Beat FX to the looping controls to the 3-band EQ knobs.
As your DJ skills advance, the DDJ-400 gives you the power to spread your wings and get more creative, thanks to its high- and low-pass filter, built-in sampler, hot cues and manual looping.
The capacitive jog wheels offer low-latency performance as you improve your scratching techniques, while the smooth pitch sliders give you precise control of your tracks' tempo when you're learning to mix a seamless set of music.
This USB bus-powered DJ controller offers plug-and-play simplicity, so you'll spend more time learning to DJ and less time setting up gear. The DDJ-400's built-in, high-quality sound card delivers crystal-clear audio, even at high volumes.

Great on a budget, very useful
If you've seen any reviews here that turn you off of the 400, here's a couple things you ought to read. 1: I have a Windows laptop that was low end when I bought it four or five years ago - it runs rekordbox just fine. If your computer is running slow, you might just need to reinstall your OS, but that's for another website. 2: Yes, the default EQ settings on the 400 just cut the audio to minus-a-few-decibels-not-sure-what BUT if you hop onto the settings for rekordbox, you can switch the EQ to the Isolator setting, which will make the low end of the EQ knob to be minus infinity, which is how DJs usually use it. Anyway! This is a great controller. It feels nice and durable, all the knobs and buttons are satisfying to handle. This was the second controller I ever physically handled; I spent a long time practicing on TribeXR, which simulates a full Nexus setup. This controller is exceptionally familiar to somebody who is comfortable on CDJs (or virtual ones, anyway). I hesitated to buy it, because, if you seen higher end controllers, you'll notice a set of buttons that control your color FX - Filter, Noise, Crush, Jet, stuff like that - but this one has none of these, just a single knob labeled filter. BUT, as always, rekordbox saves the day - check the box on top to display the FX window, click "user" next to where it says filter and you can switch out the filter for any of the ones supported by rekordbox, which should be any that you will ever need. It's not the easiest solution for on the fly FX swapping but for the price, what more can you want? An incredible deal, especially with a $125 piece of software bundled right in.

Cool machine but....
I have used quite a few controllers and I like this one very much. I enjoy learning something new about it every time I use it. The only problem I have is the software. It freezes my computer every time I open it. Its frustrating because even if I try to shut it down it won't. If it weren't for that I wouldn't be sitting here thinking about returning it.

The DDJ-400 is an incredible value. For context, I was a mobile DJ in the mid-1990s where I used a BiAMP SCM-7600 along with 1200MK2s. That was an investment way back then of over $2500 (outside of the amps, cases, speakers, etc). Not to mention the physical labor of moving vinyl records. Phew. This DDJ-400 is for home use and for fun learning. One of my kids expressed an interest percussion, I can see how she was beat counting during practice. In the first weekend, we spent hours and hours having fun mixing about 3 or 4 songs and learning beat matching. I've just begun to understand what modern features are on this controller. Beat counter, key shift, cue points, auto loops, fx, beat matching. My goodness! It takes all the work out and leave you nothing but the fun.
Simple and easy

I'd like to use this in Europe. They have different voltage. Is it just as simple as having an adapter to make it work there? Or will the performance be impacted?
You would just need to connect the dj controller to a voltage converter to use in Europe.
