Overview

Vintage inspired, yet thoroughly PRS
The PRS Silver Sky is the result of a close collaboration between Grammy Award-winning musician John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith. More than two and half years in the making, the Silver Sky is a vintage-inspired instrument that is at once familiar, but also newly PRS through and through. This model was based off of Mayer and Smith’s favorite elements from 1963 and 1964 vintage instruments, resulting in an idealized version of a vintage single-coil guitar. The attention that was paid to every detail sets this guitar apart

Some of the more distinctive specifications include, the headstock shape, tuners, neck and fretboard, bridge, and pickups and electronics. The headstock shape is based on PRS’s trademark design, but inverted to both accommodate Mayer’s playing style and also to keep a consistent length of string behind the nut, which makes staying in tune easier. The tuners are a traditional vintage-style, closed-back tuner, but with PRS’s locking design.

The right feel...the right sound
The neck shape was modeled after 1963/1964 vintage instruments, and the fretboard has a 7.25” radius. The moment your hand grabs this neck, it just feels right. Like the tuners, the steel tremolo takes a classic design and incorporates PRS’s trem arm and Gen III knife-edge screws. The bridge on the Silver Sky is setup flush to the body in the neutral position so that the tremolo bridge only goes down in pitch. By keeping the bridge in contact with the body, the guitar itself is acoustically louder, which improves the signal to noise ratio of the single-coil pickups. The 635JM single-coil pickups are very round and full, with a musical high end that is never “ice-picky” or brash.

Other high-quality specifications include a bone nut, a molded metal jack plate that is curved and makes plugging and unplugging a guitar cable hassle-free, retooled knobs, fretwire that is slightly smaller than what you’d find on most PRS electric guitars, and PRS’s double action truss rod (accessible from the front of the headstock for ease of use). Includes gig bag.

Such a nice guitar with NO CASE???

By Joe

from Arizona

Comments about PRS John Mayer Silver Sky Electric Guitar:

I had to take off one star for it coming with a GIG BAG and not a case. I didn't realize that was how they were presenting it when I ordered. After talking to GC; they said it came with a case....UNFORTUNATELY NOT THE "CASE". I called PRS directly and was informed by a very nice rep that only the 1st 500 were getting a "specialty" case. They were not sure when cases would be available for the remaining orders.
Re: the guitar itself: After watching Mayer's video blog going through the specs and his and Paul's mindset on making it, I now respect them and this guitar even more. They used all the things they love about a STRAT and eliminated those things they didn't like. In addition, they wanted to add some modern touches (which Mayer said Fender wasn't willing to do). Great explanation and really looking forward to playing it!!!
One more note on the gig bag: Not sure the premium to add a case but I wish this was an option. I'm sure the gig bag is functional but for some (including myself) it cheapens the experience....Just a thought.

Comments about PRS John Mayer Silver Sky Electric Guitar:

It's a good guitar, the only problem is it's basically an overpriced Stratocaster. Same sounding pickups, same body, just a PRS logo. I'd recommend not to buy it unless you're a John Mayer fan.

Comments about PRS John Mayer Silver Sky Electric Guitar:

This product was incredibly surprising. I was expecting a strat sound, but the tone and feel are very different surprisingly. It gives a 1965 Strat feel for a good price point. It also has a great mid scoop single coil treble tone in all positions.

Comments about PRS John Mayer Silver Sky Electric Guitar:

I already have a Crush35R which is an awesome solid state amp that sounds more like a valve amp and has great crunch. However, after watching the Rocker 15 demo video on GC.com and assorted Youtube.com clips, I wanted to get one so I placed an order with it from GC.com and I am totally blown away! It is almost like my Crush 35R but a little warmer and it is nice fit along with my Marshall DSL15 and Vox AC15. The cleans are great and the crunch is fantastic. I was going to put as a minor con that it needs reverb, but I found out after a few hours or tweaking it that I don't think I need reverb at all. If I want reverb, I can turn my MXR Reverb pedal on (and have instant ROCKERVERB!) or use the Marshall or Vox. I highly recommend to everyone to get the Rocker15 today or at least before May 31, 2018 to get a free cover and cable. I am impressed with Orange because I sent in my rebate a week and a half ago for it and the mailman had it this morning! Usually the wait for a promo rebate is 4-6 weeks! The cable is fantastic quality and the cover has a nice snug fit over the amp with a very cool big Orange logo! I have never EVER seen customer service THAT amazing from any company!

        Once again, BUY IT TODAY!

Comments about PRS John Mayer Silver Sky Electric Guitar:

I was super excited to finally get my silver sky but I was disappointed immediately when I felt the fret sprout. I tried to live with it but it was bad, I also had issues with the volume knob making a crackling noise when I touched it. I had pro coverage so I sent it back for a replacement. The replacement also had fret sprout, worse this time! Also the pickup selector was loose and made noise on the neck pickup. I believe PRS is rushing to get these out and slipping on the quality control. The over all feel of the guitar isn't impressive, certainly not worth the price, not even half the price in my opinion. My MIM strat feels and plays better. I wouldn't recommend this guitar to anyone, it's all hype. PRS is just trying to get into the strat market but they need to step up their game, there's a reason why Fender has been the best for many years. If you want a strat get the real deal, not something trying to imitate a strat.

        Cool pedal with white-noise issues.

        • Bad noise insertion issues

Comments about PRS John Mayer Silver Sky Electric Guitar:

It was fun to play with, especially with the computer interface, but started introducing bad white noise when the strings were muted. I noticed it after quite a few months of ownership. I had Pro coverage, so I exchanged it, but found the same noise issues, so I took back my original unit. After that exchange I found combinations of effects where the noise was an unbearable screeching sound. After that it mainly sat at home with a certain combination I enjoyed hearing with not much modifications, (or in other words using the switches) One day I had some time to play around and make some changes, but found my left-most switch would get stuck every time I pressed it. This would cause it to rapidly scroll through the presets. It wouldn't stop until I banged on the switch a few times till it released. The pedal was babied and looked brand new, with some dust. I took that opportunity to send it back to pro coverage which sent most of my money back.

I found a way to get around the bypass issue described by others and found I could use it in gigs if I grouped presets together according to songs, and would move to the next group at the end of each song. I could then have up to 3 presets per song that I could get to with 1-2 clicks.

For example, if you have two effect chains and want to bypass during a song, the arrangement would be: effect1 - preset with no effects - effect2. For the next song, if you wanted the same bypass with two more effects, I would tap over to the next three presets that would have effect3 - no effects - effect4. I kept my library starting at U50, or user 50 of 100, and start my gig setup at U1 and up. If my gig changed, I would clear out the U1+ and populate it again from my library. I never filled up my designated user library space, but if I ever did, I would start saving down from 50 till I encroached on my gig space.

In the end, I stopped using it for gigs. I just put the above idea in case the pedal matures.

Comments about PRS John Mayer Silver Sky Electric Guitar:

Nice guitar, lovely neck. I like the 7.25" radius, feels really great. Slightly rounder maybe than other strats I've played. Build quality is just flawless. The neck is really what stands out to me, it's a lovely size, not like some 50s strats which can be huge. It's big enough, but anyone can play this thing, it's got lovely rolled edges. Fret work is lovely too.

I will change the neck pickup as I'm extremely fussy about strat neck pickups, but that's just me. I like a brittle, very bright neck pickup. That's just my personal preference, but I put the Bare Knuckle '59 Slab Board neck pickup into everything.

          Lovely unique piece.
