Seymour Duncan

Description

Seymour Duncan AHB-3 Mick Thomson Signature Blackouts represent the pinnacle in active guitar pickup technology. Mick Thomson of Slipknot needed a set of six-string Blackouts customized to complement the complex, crushing riffs he plays in dropped tunings.“I had them tighten up the bottom because tuning low like we are, you don’t need that lower ‘woof,’” Thomson says. “And I had the top end adjusted a little bit for more cut without being harsh or scratchy. They’re extremely quiet, they’re extremely clean and they have a lot more tone than the typical active pickup. They sound more real. The harmonics are richer. It’s a bigger sound across a wider range of frequencies.”

I just bought these pickups and had them installed into my LTD KH-202. I play it through a Line 6 Spider IV 120Watt, when I plugged this guitar in I immediately noticed the change in sound from the stock ESP pickups in it previously. To describe the change, it's like going from a 240p video to a 1080i HD video. I started playing every Slipknot riff I knew and these pickups truly do give you Mick's tone. The high notes are defined, clear, and ring out. The bottom end is beastly and tight, every note is heavy and sounds organic, natural, thick, and clear. Pinch harmonics are a breeze now, they all ring out as they should. The cleans on these are as clean as you get, they are clear and have a huge tone. These pickups exceeded my expectations in sound, they are worth every penny I saved for these. The quality will blow you away and your neighbors. Also to note, these aren't your average active pickups. They sound totally different from other active pickups, they sound miles better. You can play anything on these, I was able to play some blues licks and clean stuff and they still performed great. If you are like me and like to play in low tunings, these are perfect. If you want Mick's tone then this is a must have.

I have been interested in playing some active pickups for years and recently bought an MTM2 that I though should have them. I've always been a fan of high gain passive pickups and have been aware of how sterile active pickups can sound. Even my guitar tech who said he's never liked actives said these were definitely something different! These give you the ultra high gain only an active pickup with an onboard preamp can give you, but with the organic balanced mids and warmth of a high gain passive pickup. The tone differences between the neck and bridge are most noticeable on a clean channel, but this bridge pickup on a lead channel will literally shatter all the glass in your home. I was on the fence between these Blackout EMTYs and the classic EMG 81/85 combo. I'm glad I'm playing the Blackouts now!

Bought these pickups and put them in my ibanez rg 4 and it sounds so crisp on clear effects and on overdrive unless you have your distortion maxed there is no feedback through them. only problem is there pricey to have them installed if you dont know how to.
