Overview

The affordable Mitchell MD200 offers a double cutaway basswood body and a one-piece maple neck. For a modern sound, there's a rail-style ceramic humbucker in the bridge and mini-rail humbucker in the neck position. They both provide a more consistent magnetic pull versus standard pole pieces, enhancing overall tone and sustain. High-ratio tuners allows for precise tuning control. The MD200 also includes a flatter neck radius, which allows for easier fretboard gymnastics. For even more sustain and articulation, the MD200 comes with string-through body construction.

All Mitchell electric guitars receive a complete stateside setup and quality control inspection to ensure exceptional playability. Available in Black (BK) and White (WH). Case sold separately.

MD200 Features

• Modern basswood double-cutaway body and a maple neck with smooth fretboard
• H/mini-H pickup configuration with paraffin-dipped, rail-style ceramic pickups reduce microphonics and unwanted feedback while mitigating tonal dropouts
• Deep Bevel Cutaway (DBC) design allows for complete fretboard access
• String-through body design and traditional, adjustable TOM-style bridge for outstanding sustain and solid intonation
• High-tensile strength fretwire for durability and smooth playing

Looks like it is made in same factories or design is almost identical to Schecter's cheaper C-1 model.
So far I am impressed. The finish has a small overspray on the raw wood on the headstock. No big deal. Neck could be smoother. I probably will Scotch Brite it if I keep it.

Finish is really thin. The green one on the wall had been damaged and it looked so thin, it peeled off near the volume knobs. GC staff think it will sell that way and would not sell it for less than marked. It won't sell.

I really wanted to like this guitar because of the earlier positive reviews, looks and design. I HAVE a Mitchell acoustic/electric that plays well and is finished nicely. When GC put the MD200 on sale for Memorial Day, I went to the store to give it a spin. YIKES! The fret finishing was horrible on three different ones I tried. All had two or three frets that were obviously higher than the rest (just looking at the neck) and the results showed in playing. Massive buzzing and string rattle in spite of the action already being set high. It would take a full fret dress to get this thing playable.

Moving on to the electronics, the bridge pickup is decent but the "hot rail" pickup at the neck position is pathetic. Virtually no output on the lower strings and what output there was overall was thin. To be fair, the P/U looked like it was set too low but who knows if it's adjustable vertically. Hard to tell with the tiny phillips head screws. Another one I tried had no output from the full neck pickup period so a wire had either come loose or the p/u was shorted.

On to the finish. There were several places on the white model I tried where they get the spray coat on evenly. At the jack, you could see raw wood and same around the neck pickup cavity. Overall, both black and white look good from a few feet away but up close not so much.

When I handed the (new from box) white one back to the sales dude and showed him what was wrong with the fretwork, he was incredulous. Showed it to the assistant manager. Both agreed it was one of the worst fresh out of box guitars they'd seen.

I think Mitchell is a Guitar Center house brand so I'm surprised at how they could let such poorly finished guitars into their stores. You need to step up the QC guys.

Comments about Mitchell MD200 Double Cutaway Electric Guitar:

This guitar surprised me with the great feel of the neck. For this price I was expecting the frets to be rough and uneven, but this wasn't the case. It felt like a much more expensive guitar, with a very solid and playable feel to it. In terms of usability out of the box, it's not good. It needs a thorough setup. I'm doing the neck, action and intonation. The pickups come almost randomly screwed into the body at ridiculous clearances form the strings. So yes the pickups need a proper setup to get a half decent sound out of the guitar. The pickups are a little dark sounding, but not the worst I've heard. The bridge humbucker has a split coil setting, which makes the tone much brighter. All up with some work, this can become a very usable guitar.

Comments about Mitchell MD200 Double Cutaway Electric Guitar:

After spending over 40 years playing acoustic steel string and (mostly) acoustic nylon string I decided to have a little fun trying to learn electric rock/metal/blues and maybe a bit more jazz that fits well. I have tried a few times before but could never get used to the neck. I always thought it was the width of the acoustic (especially classical) fretboards that it difficult to transition, but I now think it had much or more to do with the neck radius. this was comfortable for me the minute I picked it up. I can't really comment on the pickups and tone. Personally, I think it is too hot for what I want. I'd like to be able to get a smoother darker jazz tone than I can get. Quite possibly I just need to learn to control my amps better and work with the volume and tone controls better. Another thought is that the pickups seem so closely matched in tone and output... I really think if you switched the large hummer and small hummer positions (neck, bridge) you'd find it hard to notice the difference. I might try swapping one of the pickups for the half-dozen around the workshop. Opened up the controls cavity, the wiring looks neat and the solder joints look good. One thing I wish someone could give me a few pointers on..... I don't really understand the push-pull pot (tone/coil tap). I'm probably just misunderstanding but the diagrams I see is that this is a "coil-split" not a "Coil-Tap). It does cut the volume when pulled. What am I working with here? Not much tone diff up or down, up cuts the volume by roughly 50% but up or down this switch/pot seems to work as a master volume. Yes, I'm confused and I'm probably just not grasping some simple concept. Thanks for any help.

Comments about Mitchell MD200 Double Cutaway Electric Guitar:

Not that bad of a guitar. I've heard horror stories about this model and I think I just got lucky. The white model has some noticeable finish problems around the jack and neck pick up cavity as well as inside the cut aways. Frets tend to buzz if the action is moved too far from the factory preset, which is already high. The pickups are decent in standard tuning and without coil split, however, when using the coil split, there is virtually no change in sound and all you get is a bunch of annoying buzz. Is this guitar perfect? No. Is it great from practicing, traveling, and for beginners? Absolutely. Sounds decent in standard tuning without too much distortion, but can't do heavy metal. Still fun to play and fits in smaller hands. It's well put together, has decent sound, but could use more QC on the finish.

Comments about Mitchell MD200 Double Cutaway Electric Guitar:

Honestly bought this guitar because it was very affordable. Didn't have any knowledge of Mitchell guitars, I just saw it was cheap. I have no real expertise in music, just a novice guitar enthusiast. Can't call myself a guitar player yet. Better at buying them than playing them right now. Actually bought this one before I even knew what to look for. Honestly for the money, no complaints either. Now, since I have bought others, I will say that the sound quality isn't there on this one, however still perfect for practicing and working on chords and scales and still fun to play. Oh, I will say I had to smooth out the frets. I didn't know being a novice that the frets weren't supposed to tear your hands up!!!! Just FYI. They were very sharp, so filed them down with an emery board.
