Description
Adjustable Power Output
The DSL models feature adjustable power settings, which delivers all-valve tone and feel, at any volume, from bedroom to stage. This technology adjusts power to the valves, instead of just turning off valve stages, allowing the amp to remain articulate and dynamic.
EQ Refinements
Some innovative tweaks to the EQ circuitry have given the new DSLs even greater tonal flexibility. The EQ section of the new DSLs can deliver exactly what your ears are looking for.
Emulated Output
Marshall's partnership with Softube has led to the creation of award-winning plug-ins, as well as exceptional tone in its CODE digital amps. The same team is responsible for the development of the new emulated output feature, found in the DSL series. Both the headphone out, and line out on the DSL models boast incredibly accurate emulation of Marshall's famed 1960 cabinet.
Reverb, Resonance and Master Volume
The DSL is now more versatile than ever, with features including discrete master volume controls for each channel, built-in reverb and resonance controls (the DSL1 and DSL5 do not offer resonance controls).
New Models
Additions to the range include the DSL1 head and combos, which offer all-valve Marshall DSL tone in a smaller package, plus a DSL20 combo and head.

Low watt doesn't mean low power.
I use it primarily for home and personal use. I always liked the benefits of tube amps, have always liked Marshall sound but until this it was hard to justify the cost. This is great for the benefits of tubes, the overall Marshall sound and is still house friendly. The sound is surprisingly dynamic, great overall tone, definitely...and literally screams Marshall. The cleaner side of it is to the bright side but there's an EQ for that. The high gain channel is exactly what you expect from a DSL. Having been around the DSL family a bit, and now owning this, I feel like it's fair to say I'm a part of the DSL crowd. It is an 8 inch speaker, no getting around that unless you get one of the larger low watt DSL tube combos...it is what it is. The speaker is fine for exactly what it is, it's intended purpose and audience. You can't expect more from the speaker without getting a larger speaker. Controls are incredibly simple, no frills and do make the amp that much better in my opinion, but that's not to say there aren't a couple shortfalls (kinda). The classic gain channel only has a gain control (along with the three band EQ of course) so there are some limitations there, however minor. The reverb doesn't really seem to kick in till about 4 or 5 and even then it's subtle. It doesn't sound bad, of course a spring reverb would be better but again, for what it is, it's probably just fine. At the end of the day, it's a small, low watt DSL with most of the DSL glory on tap. Great for the bedroom rocker, apartment dweller or I'd imagine even a good practice amp or in home recording. It's built as you expect a Marshall to be built, sounds great and functions with ease. Added benefits with being able to power a cab from it and an F/X loop so you have a perfectly capable little amp. If you want Marshall sound without spending a lot, and don't mind a couple minor short falls (reverb and only a gain control for the classic channel), this cannot be beat.

Good little amp, but there's one thing.....
Overall I really wanted to like this little Marshall. It had great tone for such a little tube amp; however whenever I switched from Ultra Gain to Classic Gain there was a very noticeable and annoying pop if a note or chord was being played that I couldn't get over. After searching the internet I came to realize that this is common in these amps. Not sure if it's a design flaw or what, but I have the DSL40CR and it doesn't do that. If you can live with the pop then I would say go for it because it is a good sounding little amp, but for me it's a deal breaker.

Love this amp. Great at home/bedroom amp. Sound great at low or high volumes. The 8in speaker is ok but I suggest plugging it to a Marshall 2x12 cabinet for a better sound. That's what I did and am very happy with the results. The advantage of the combo compared to the dsl1 amp head is that if you want to take to a friend to jam, it's an easy load without dragging the cab with.

I'm a new player and my previous amp was a $150 solid state amp and this is my first tube amp. I'm blown away by how much better this one sounds. At 1W I was thinking it would be a wimpy little thing, but this baby packs a punch. It's so much louder than I expected and the sound quality is phenomenal. I don't know if I'll ever go back to solid state after this amp.

Do I get a new marshall dsl1cr combo or a used dsl20cr combo that's lighter than peavey classic 50 212 for practice
It depends on the preference. Just for practice, either one will work. But if you're looking to maybe jamming with others I would say go for the DLS20crsubmitted5 years ago
