La Bella

collapse expand iconDescription

Since the 1950s and 1960s, La Bella's Deep Talkin' Bass Stainless Steel Flat Wounds have been the choice of professional bass players and continue to be the standard for some of the best-sounding flat wound strings on the market.

All standard bass sets are long scale length. The 1st (G), 2nd (D), 3rd (A) strings are 38" from ball-end to silk/taper. The 4th (E) string is 36 3/4" from ball-end to silk/taper. Only the silk portion of the string should wrap around the tuning post or else the string will break. This particular set is not suitable for basses with bridges that require strings to pass through the body of the instrument.

I've tried all the major brands' flatwounds over the past 40 years: some were too bright, too muddy, too stiff, too much tension, too floppy… then I bought a used short scale P bass (Sandberg) that came with this same set of Labella flats but medium gage and short scale: beautifully made to the touch, amazing tone with wide range and just the right amount of tension. I had a set of cobalt flats on my Fender P but they lacked body and the tone was a bit messy with overtones. This set of Labella flats is just perfect- I can get a full range of P bass tones with very minor adjustments to my plucking hand position and the tone cut knob (but mostly the former).

Will these long scale strings fit on a squier P bass (34" scale length) and if not, does La Bella offer a medium length set?
