Kat on a Budget

By R.B. Hunter

from Wimington De.

Comments about KAT Percussion Electronic Drum and Percussion Pad Sound Module:

I am a big fan of Kat products, I have owned a Drum Kat for years, It is made of heavy gage steel and the Pads are solid and Very playable and it has so many features that you could probably never use them all, So when I heard of the Multi Pad with on board sounds for $119.00 I had to try it, On the Minus side its made of plastic and no where near as rugged as a Drum Kat or Mallet Kat, when using sticks, it feels hollow, not very solid and had me searching my stick bag for my lightest sticks, also on the minus side, there is no MIDI IN so it is kind of useless for sequencing, On the Plus side, The Multi Pad is Very easy to use and playing it with my hands worked well for me, with a nice assortment of drum and percussion sounds that are tunable and can be panned it will be quite useful to me in adding percussion to my tracks, it also has a USB port for direct connect to your computer, So, with all that said, I think for $119.00 you can't go wrong, it is not the End All percussion controller Sound module but I sure am having a lot of fun with mine. Comments about KAT Percussion Electronic Drum and Percussion Pad Sound Module:

Okay, first off I am a rhythm guitarist and a geezer to boot, so acoustic drums and drum machines were always a problem for me. Not with this little baby! The pads are sensitive enough to play using fingers which means if you can work out the beat using your thumbs and fingers you can add drums to your home demos. It is easy to use and the controls are fairly intuitive. An all around good investment.

3.5 stars. For $100 this is definitely a cool toy.

Comments about KAT Percussion Electronic Drum and Percussion Pad Sound Module:

3.5 stars. For $100 this is a cool toy. I was wondering if it could replace my Roland Handsonic 10 on some gigs...instead of upgrading to the Roland Handsonic 20 which is ~$800. maaaayyybe, with some work, but probably not...This KAT's internal sounds are very low quality in comparison to Roland's...the method for creating kits is easy to understand from the manual, but not intuitive (give me a selection of cool kits ready to go like roland). USB Triggering works really well in Ableton Live from the KAT - as long as you're cool with only 4 pads. The sensitivity for playing with hands/fingers is ok, but not great. I LOVE the light weight, and the included plastic stand attachment saves some $. Cool that it takes kick and hihat inputs. It could be a tiny drum kit for sure. If you need to go on the cheap, and have a computer set-up, its cool. Definitely no Handsonic. If I can get some really good samples loaded into Ableton, maybe it can work in a pinch on some gigs.

Great percussion pad, the sounds are tight and the pads don't cross trigger. It's really easy to set up and the price is just right.

        My favorite inexpensive multipad.

Comments about KAT Percussion Electronic Drum and Percussion Pad Sound Module:

My space is limited at home; there is no room for my full acoustic kit. Even my whittled down e-kit makes my studio space cramped. I needed some way to practice new songs before rehearsal. I also needed something smaller and quicker to set up and take down for rehearsals where the full kit was not needed. This is perfect. The sounds are very good. With a switch pedal for the hi hat and a kick pedal with trigger for the bass drum, I'm good to go. The pads are very responsive, and I have not had any trouble with cross-triggering.
At home, I use headphones. At rehearsal, I go thru the PA. I also have a couple options for live playing. It sounds excellent thru my 300-watt keyboard amp!
There is one minor nuisance: it has no ability to save kits. It will remember the one you set up, but if I practice at home with a normal kit setup (kick, snare, Hi Hat, tom and crash) and want to play live on my regular kit, with percussion sounds added on the Kat, it requires manually changing each time. I would have given it 4 stars because of this, but I knew it going in and I knew it would not be a problem for my intended use. It may be an issue for you.
I have owned several multipads, and for the price, this one is my favorite. I love it.

Comments about KAT Percussion Electronic Drum and Percussion Pad Sound Module:

I got this to use for a Christmas show needing some percussion sounds. I have had an Octapad SPD 30 in the past. The sounds here are not quite up to that but are definitely usable. It is much easier to program than an Octapad but the big drawback is not being able to save a setup as a kit. It's not that big of a deal for what I use it for since it is so easy to program, but that definitely would be nice. However, at such an incredibly low price it's understandable.

Oh, the pads function really well, no cross-talk and reasonable sensitivity. It's kind of fun with my Roland kick trigger for a mini-kit.

Comments about KAT Percussion Electronic Drum and Percussion Pad Sound Module:

1/4 jack allows you to plug into amp or recording deck with standard instrument cable. This unit works great especially if you can't play drums but want to add drums to your track. Just play the kick and snare on one track, cymbal and hi-hat on another, tom on another track, etc. . . .I used it with Tascam dp24sd and it works great. Do a sub-mix after laying down tracks and you've got it. Also great for practicing or jamming at parties!
