Groove Tubes

collapse expand iconDescription

These Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-6L6-R Matched Power Tubes are Russian made, same as the 5881, but matched in the GT system. These are a very sturdy and reliable tube, with slightly less power and a more aggressive edge when pushed into distortion.

These are the tubes that are used by Fender in amps that use 6L6 tubes and DO NOT come from their Custom Shop. These are used in the Hot Rod series, Blues DeVille series, Pro Tube series, BF reissue series.

The GT 6L6GE is used in the 57 Tweed, Vibroverb and Vibro King amps.

If you are trying to match your stock tube rating with the GT rating:

On Fender amps, output tubes in newer amps are color coded. The scale is:

Blue = GT 1-3 rating
White = GT 4-7 rating
Red = GT 8-10 rating

Low, medium, and high style descriptions refer to break up modes of the tube for an overdriven guitar signal. High-rated tubes break up slow and have the highest amount of headroom, while low-rated tubes break up easier and have the least headroom, yielding a heavier, harder distortion. Medium-rated tubes fall in between.

  • Sonically bland, yet microphonic

    Never cared for Sovteks (what these are), as they have all the sonic character of a potato buried in Siberian permafrost, but I've never had a bad one out of the box. Picked up a matched pair that GT rebranded and "tested" at an upcharge to find one was wildly microphonic. Yikes.

    I purchased the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III knowing it had a clean channel and dirty channel. I use pedals into the amp through the clean channel, but at volumes higher than 3 or 4 on the amp, it would start to break up. I called Fender who confirmed the stock tubes are rated between 4 and 7 which break up that early. So they recommended these tubes rated between 8 and 10. I got the 10. After installing and learning how to re-bias the amp on YouTube, the amp plays very clean when cranked up to 8. Works as expected.

    I use a 7 rating in my Mesa Dual Rectifier and they sound phenomenal. I've had the same pair in for about 2 years through a LOT of touring, and i'm just NOW starting to see a difference in tone and quality. I play more of a pop/rock style and these tubes help really fill out the mix on stage. They are so versatile! i can have a great low gain tone for a more indie sound, but also a great heavy sound for the hard breakdowns. I definitely recommend these. These tubes along with the GT Russian Preamps, great combo!
