Gretsch Drums - An Inspirational Timeline

Description
The Gretsch Drums Catalina Maple 6-Piece Shell Pack with Free 8" Tom in Walnut Glaze is engineered for maximum projection and balanced tone across the full sonic spectrum. Gretsch crafted the shell pack's rounded-shoulder, 7-ply maple shells and 30° bearing edges to produce an explosive attack with ample low end. The set's streamlined yet robust mounting hardware, including GTS suspension mounts, minimal L-arms and "gas cap" bass drum plate, provides stability and ergonomic positioning for drummers of all styles. With add-on drums available for expanded configurations, the Catalina Maple set offers professional-caliber sound and build quality for drummers ready to take their playing to the next level.
Premium Maple Shells Deliver Wide-Ranging Tone
At the heart of the Catalina Maple's superb sound are Gretsch's proprietary 7-ply maple shells. Gretsch engineers developed the shell recipe and construction to achieve maximum volume and projection while also producing full, warm bass frequencies. The shells' rounded shoulders and 30° bearing edges further enhance resonance and tonal balance across the drum set. The result is a versatile set able to handle any musical situation, from rock to country to jazz.
Innovative Hardware Provides Solid Support
Gretsch designed the Catalina Maple series' hardware for functionality, adjustability and minimal esthetic. The suspension-style GTS tom mounts and minimal L-arms provide drummers an unimpeded view of the shell interiors while keeping drums securely in position. The "gas cap" bass drum plate attaches to kick drums via a single bolt for quick head changes. Gretsch's round die-cast bass drum claws grip hoops firmly while preventing damage. All fittings use Gretsch's T-Wing screws and bolts for convenient hand tightening and rubber gaskets reduce metal-on-metal contact.
Add-On Drums Allow for Custom Configurations
While the Catalina Maple 6-piece shell pack includes essential drums for a complete setup, Gretsch offers add-on drums to suit any player's needs. Additional rack toms, floor toms and snare drums are available to expand the shell pack into larger configurations. With a choice of lacquer and wrap finishes to match the shell pack, drummers can customize the Catalina Maple series to their precise specifications and playing style.
Premium Drum Heads and Badges Complete the Package
Gretsch outfits the Catalina Maple series with quality Remo drumheads, including coated batters on toms and snare and clear bass drum batters. The bass drum heads also feature internal muffle rings for controlled resonance. Distinctive round badges on each drum proudly display the Gretsch name. Combined with the shell pack's high-gloss lacquer or sparkle wrap finishes, the Remo heads and badges give the Catalina Maple a professional appearance on stage and in the studio.

Amazing kit! Sounds great plays loud.
What can I say. I have been playing for 35 yrs started with Yamaha then to Pearl. My current studio kit is a Pearl Reference kit. So when I embarq on a journey for a gig kit it had to fit the bill. 1) must be Maple 2) must be road worthy 3) must fit budget of $3500 ( kit, road bags, and hardware) Tall order. It came down to Tama Superstar and this Catilina. Not only did the Catilina play better with the stock heads but once you replaced then to Evans G2 the kit will blow you away! The only thing wrong with the kit would be an option for a virgin kick. I only set up the 12,14,16 and this kit groves. I play anything from Paul Simon the puddle of mudd and the kit so far holding up to my expectations. If your having second thoughts about this kit then go out and take them for a test drive. Price, playability and road worthy take from me who has gone through a ton of gear this kit will be in my arsenal for years to come. Cheers And keep playing

Don't know if ill be buying from Gretsch again
I bought my Gretsch Catalina Maple less than a year ago and unfortunately the wingnut on the bass drum gasket (holds the tom arm) stripped. Now I'm not the strongest person and do not believe in over tightening them but it still stripped. No problem im sure i can get another for cheap so I contact Gretsch who apparently has only 1 drum shop in California where im told they do not handle the Catalina Maple here in the US. They ask for pictures of the affected area so i send them. Then after 2 weeks of waiting i contact again to follow up and they say they need my proof of purchase and my home address. I send that to them, wait another 2 weeks to hear back because they say they will send that info over to their company overseas and they will send me the parts. I contact them again and they AGAIN ask for pictures of the affected area because the first ones were not clear enough. I send those and wait yet another week or so and contact them to follow up they say they are sending the information to Hal Leonard so they can send me that part. Its been quite the ordeal having to constantly follow up because i get no responses to emails and no definitive answers. Its now been roughly 2 months and im still unable to play this kit at gigs because of this faulty hardware. If you buy this kit understand you will go through this in the case that anything is damaged on delivery or if something fails.

This set is awesome, sounds great and very versatile and very fun to play on. Only issue is i was never given the right tom mount for the 8in tom from the store which should have been included and was told to buy a cheap cowbell arm which is barely holding up the tom
This is the best drum kit I bought in my 11 years but

I got to say I've been jumping between Tama, Pearl, DW, pdp, and many more and this kit is by far the best one I've played in, however the reason I give this a four star is because the heads that came with it are very poor quality. In the first week I had this kit I broke six heads, replace the heads otherwise best kit at it's price point

Currently I teach drums at Guitar Center so I'm lucky enough to try many kits and this has everything and then some. The best thing is getting a 7 piece kit that can go from a full-on rock kit to a stripped down jazz kit- with TWO floor toms! The tom mounting can take a bit of practice since, if it is locked into the position you want when you let go of the tom it tilts bc there is a "free floating" design. If both toms are mounted on the kick the mounting is fine, if you use just the left tom it puts stress on the kick mount that could cause an issue since it seems to be plastic, so I just took it out and mounted it on my cymbal stand. A turn-key used to tighten the tom to the stand though somehow bent to a 45deg angle?? it still works but I have no idea why it bent. Seems by reducing costs the strength of metals used is reduced also which lead to bends or worse, shear off.

Best Maple Drum Kit under $1,000

There is not one bad thing I can say about this kit. Throw some Remo Coated Ambassador heads on her and she'll rival the sound quality of a $5k Pearl Reference, Yamaha Recording Custom, Tama Star or Sonor SQ1. You get the point...you get so much quality in these shells for under $1,000 it's almost comical. If you are just starting to get into the drums, or you are a professional drummer playing large venues, there is not a better valued drum set on this planet. With or without mics, these drum shells SING!!!! I complement these drums with mix of high end Zildjian K, A Custom Crashes, Splashes, Sabian HH/HHX Evolution Ride cymbals, Crashes, and Wuhan Trash Cymbals. I would put the sound quality of my Gretsch Catalina Maple and my cymbal setup against any high-end drum/cymbal combo and I'll still be $3,000 less then any of them. Get one, put some quality Remo or Evans heads on her, match her with high end cymbals (Zildjian K/A Custom or Sabian HHX Evolution, Paiste are over priced and overrated) and you'll be floored and wanting to play every day just to hear her sing.
