Epiphone SG Standard ’61 | First Impressions with Arianna Powell

Epiphone
Description
From the modern Inspired by Gibson Collection, the Epiphone SG Standard 60s is a recreation of the rare 1961 Gibson SG from its first year of production. Now available at Guitar Center, the Epiphone SG Standard 60s features a classic mahogany body and mahogany neck in a Vintage Cherry finish. A set of powerful ProBucker humbucking pickups and premium hardware round out this iconic-looking and -sounding axe.

Epiphone SG Standard 60s Main Features

  • Mahogany body with a Vintage Cherry finish
  • SlimTaper mahogany neck, 22-fret, 12" radius Indian laurel fretboard
  • Dual ProBucker humbucking pickups with CTS electronics and 3-way switch
  • LockTone ABR tune-o-matic bridge, stopbar tailpiece, Epiphone Deluxe Vintage machine heads with an 18:1 ratio, Graph Tech nut

Mahogany Body with a Vintage Finish

Mirroring the classic Gibson model, the Epiphone SG Standard 60s is constructed from an all-mahogany body. The mahogany body offers a warm, rich and well-balanced tone, and a good amount of depth. Completing the mahogany body is a classic Vintage Cherry finish.

SlimTaper neck construction

The classic SlimTaper neck construction is popular among Guitar Center customers for its fast touch and smooth playability. With its design, the SlimTaper neck promotes speed while reducing player fatigue. It's also made from mahogany, which extends the sonic depth of the mahogany body. It also includes an Indian laurel fretboard that adds to the guitar's vibrant tone, and a Graph Tech nut. Some of the more distinctive specifications include an upgraded headstock shape, which is based on Gibson's classic '60s Kalamazoo shape.

ProBucker with CTS Electronics

The Epiphone SG Standard 60s is equipped with two ProBucker humbucking pickups in the neck and bridge. Powered by their Alnico II magnets and CTS electronics, these pickups help the Epiphone SG Standard 60s churn out a plethora of sounds—from jazz to metal and beyond.

Classic Gibson-Inspired Hardware

Rounding out the Epiphone SG Standard 60s are its LockTone ABR tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece for ultimate tuning stability.

Other notable specifications include Epiphone Deluxe Vintage machine heads with an 18:1 ratio and a Graph Tech nut that enhances sustain and tonal balance. Additional features include trapezoid inlays and nickel hardware plating.

This guitar sounds so good. My son is learning on it too! Great tone and excellent sustain. Blues or metal (I love both). The SG is sweet! #sweepstakes

as an intermediate guitarist my self this is the best guitar i could not have chosen a better guitar, the neck feels amazing compared to my squier, and the tone i amazing for the price, the frets are a little sharp but they don't get in the way of playability, over all for the price you are getting a really good deal.

This is a great guitar. Plays fast and easy. The pick ups are perfect and you can get just about any sound from it you want. It's an SG, and it rocks. Not ideal for jazz, but you can get a very nice blues tones out of it. The thin neck was really a great surprise for me too, made it easier to reach some chords that I struggled getting on my other instruments. I took off the 10s and put on 9s and love it. It holds intonation well too. And I live the look of it...I recommend getting a pro to set it up for you out of the box.

  • Great guitar. Great value.

Only weird thing was my phone caused feedback in the pickups. Took a while to isolate.

I've owned a Gibson SG Standard, a Gibson SG Faded, and an Epiphone G400 and sold them all. This is better than all three. The neck is just right - a little thicker than the Gibson SG and thinner than the G400. The neck balance is as good as the Gibsons. The pickup adjustability with the small pickguard is better than the Gibsons with the batwing. Through my amp, the properly adjusted Epiphone Probuckers on this sound better than the Gibson 490's on my SG standard (which were never parallel to the strings). I love this guitar. Buy it.

What is the weight of this guitar

    Open Reply - Gear-Support
All guitars vary depending on the density of the wood. Manufacturers usually only spec size and type of wood. Guitars are generally between 6 and 12 lbs. They can be more. The only way to know the weight of an individual instrument is to weigh it. I'm sorry but I don't have one to weigh. This will be approximately 7.5 – 8.0 lbs.

Would I be able to get this guitar custom ordered in ebony through GC or would I have to go straight to epiphone to order one?

We don't carry it and I doubt Epiphone will custom make one for you. Most likely you will need to wait until they're available again.
