Epiphone G-400 SG Electric Guitar Ebony

Those of you out there that are influenced by reviews stating that this is a "beginner" guitar, do not listen. It is truly an amazing guitar for a very decent price. I have been playing for about 35 years and I own one of these bad boys and it continues to deliver every time I have a gig. It sounds rock solid through a driven tube amp! it has a lot of character and never disappoints me! the tone is like any other "Gibson" SG, heavy, fat at times, and in your face; EXCELLENT for hard rock and metal! Like many guitars with humbuckers, it's characteristics do not come through when playing clean; not like a single coil strat. This is a straight across the table rocker guitar. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to buy this beauty. the only down fall is that the neck/head is too heavy for the rest of the body which causes it to dip downward at the head stock but that is truly THE only negative thing I can think of.

I bought the guitar 6 weeks ago. I put it into the shop right away and had the bridge PU replaced with a DiMarzio Super Distortion. The luthier set the set and polished the frets. This is a guitar built for Rock and Metal. The mahogany tones are thick and warm. I played it through a Blackstar amp at Guitar Center before buying and a Carvin SX-200 at home and both are loud and proud if you like to Rock. The clean tones are equally pleasant. Great guitar. Buy one and customize it and treat it right.

These manufactures continue to make beautiful looking guitars, but, mine disappointed me on issues important to a guitar player, the thing that really frustrated me the most is that after spending the many hundreds to purchase this guitar, I found out that they did not have the skilled craftsmanship and correct manufacturing process to make a guitar that does not come with a fret buzz that can be removed with a set up. They need to start thinking about making a guitar that has low enough action and no fret buzz. Also, on mine the output jack screw fell out right away and somehow also cracked the fragile thin plastic finish, I barely touched it,(wiggled the cable) and it broke it. I added a four screw plastic output jack plate to help secure the screw on the output, that worked. Because of the chip and crack by the output jack I could see underneath the finish, it may technically be wood of some sort, however, it looks more like laminated cardboard or particle board. Also, the neck is glued to the body and not bolted. You could get one and then get lucky and find that with a good set up, that might correct the high action and annoying fret buzz, yet, until these guitar manufactures commit themselves to making a true high quality, playable instruments, it's still a gamble.

This is the one with the smaller pickguard, modeled after the '61 SG. The other is a '66 model with the full pickguard. I have owned both, the '61 model is the better for me. It has a thicker profile neck and is more stable. I still have the '61, sold the '66. The one I kept is a very good and well built guitar. Hardware is good, tuners work well (might modify the headstock to accept vintage style tuners, good looks plus a weight saving option that will make the guitar a bit less top heavy). Pickups are the weakest point for me, not very articulate, a bit too much midrange for my taste. Some may say they are warm sounding, to me a bit muddy. An easy fix with some pickups of your choice. Full size pots, switch works well. My favorite part is the neck, very smooth playing, good fretwork, nice profile. Note most guitars need some set-up but this was easy on this guitar, just some minor tweaks to the truss rod and the bridge plus a bit of filing to the nut to make it the correct height and the slots wide enough to keep the strings from binding. Note if you switch to a heavier gauge string you will need to do a proper setup. People complain about it not staying in tune but most tuning issue's are from a badly cut nut. There is lots of info on the internet on how to set up a guitar. A good tech will cost you if you can't do it yourself and I would not trust a store employee to do it right unless they have a good tech on staff. BTW the fret work is near perfect, a big plus as this is the most labor intensive part to get right, frets were level and fret ends were well rounded. I have a precision sanding beam which I have to make use of on 90% of guitars I buy, didn't have to get it out for this one. To sum it up the Epi SG 400 is a very nice guitar, not perfect but well worth the cost of admission hence the 5 star review. I have bought MUCH more expensive guitars that needed a lot more work.

This was my first electric guitar, i got it about three years ago. I was thrilled at first. i couldn't put it down. but then i started realizing some of the problems. The nut around the pickup switch has to be tightened constantly, and so does the nut around the jack. And if you want to play a gig with this guitar you have to be very careful, as the strap head is on the back under the neck, and straps will slip if you bounce around too much. the pickups are OK for light-heavy rock, but not so good for metal, they just don't deliver like EMGs or Seymour Duncans. All and all, this guitar is decent. Great if your a beginner or are just looking to jam.
