Direct Sound

collapse expand iconDescription

Direct Sound Extreme Isolation Headphones are used by Terry Bozzio, Shawn Drover of Megadeth, and they're Blue Man group approved. The Direct Sound EX-29 headphones let drummers hear both mix and acoustic drums clearly at ear-saving levels. Now drummers can record "live" drums right next to their mixers; front-of-house engineers can monitor comfortably during live performances; studio musicians can finally hear the cue mix over loud instruments; engineers can use them for mic placement, and DJ's can isolate one ear and hear both CD and loudspeakers clearly for beat mixing.

What makes Direct Sound EX-29 sound isolation headphones so extreme? Specially designed earmuffs passively attenuate surrounding sound by a comfortable average of 28 decibels throughout the sound spectrum. With custom-fitted speaker assembly, the speakers are designed to protect your eardrums from damage and improve your recording and performance experience.

A frequency range of 20Hz–20kHz and advanced an-isotropic magnet drivers offer superior fidelity and sensitivity. Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme headphones fold for easy storage. Convenient dual cords are worn behind the head, which prevents them from interfering with your hands or instruments.

Not just for drummers, Direct Extreme Isolation Headphones are great for project studios, stage and studio musicians, sound engineers or for solitude at home.

These are some of the best cans I've ever owned

I read the other reviews here and noticed a couple guys saying the quality of construction on these things isn't very good. Worse yet, someone said the customer service is bad! This couldn't be further from the truth. I've owned my pair for about a year now and it's undergone a LOT of abuse in that time. I work in film and TV production and due to the nature of my work, my gear gets knocked around a lot. These cans have been dropped, stepped on, sat on, crushed under a heavy 2k light during transport, slammed in a car door, and been exposed to dust, dirt, rain and extreme heat (115 degrees in Arizona) and come through it all with only minor problems (a seam on the headband padding split, and the glue on the ear pads melted in extreme heat), both of which were dealt with by the company the same day or the next day from when I emailed them. Best yet, every time I've emailed the company, the OWNER himself has been the one to respond. These guys make an extremely durable, comfortable, quality product and clearly care very much about their customers. If you have any kind of problem with yours, remember that there is a manufacturer warranty of one year and go ahead and contact them to get your troubles resolved. I use EX-29 Extreme Isolation headphones on every shoot I work and have no problem recommending them to anyone, especially people in my same line of work. They're comfortable enough to wear for long days on set (I often wear them for 12 hours or more at a time with only short breaks to prevent listening fatigue), durable enough to survive being sat on by a 300 pond grip (although I wouldn't recommend doing that on purpose), and the isolation is invaluable to hear just what your mics are hearing, without any outside distractions. Add in stellar customer service and a great warranty, and you have one seriously fine product, especially for the price point.

Very low quality connector/cable

These headphones are decent sounding, offer some isolation and have the lowest quality cables and connector I have ever seen. Expect zero support from the manufacturer. Expect to replace the mini-jack connector or the entire wiring.

  • Poor Isolation

I bought these for drum practice. My kit is mic'd up with 6 mics run into a mixer which I headphone out from. The isolation just didn't cut it and I found the drums bleeding in far too much. My bluetooth work earmuffs also rated at 29db offer considerably better isolation. I'm not sure the 29db rating on these is accurate. Real shame because the speakers in these sound great.

I have had these for a few years. I primarily bought them for when I drum. They do produce good volume but the isolation is poor at best. The connect is poor quality. 2 weeks after buying them the wires were pulling out of the connector. Tonight after I plugged my iPod in the left ear piece stopped working. I would not recommend these for some one who is going to use them on the daily.

I bought these to use to listen to music while playing drums. I didn't even make it one step before the cord fell out of my phone. I figured it was just me and kept trying to get it to stay but it wouldn't stay for more than a few seconds. I tried a friend's phone and it was even worse, just loose. I finally contacted guitar center and they said it's a known problem with this item. Then stop selling it!!!

Decent overall but they don't come with a carry bag, the leather headband, and they don't seal as good as they should if you aren't bald.

  • Excellent!

I do live recording at clubs, and these are mandatory if you want to do any type on monitoring.

I wanted to know if these headphones could be used to connect them straight into my eletric drum set. I own an Alesis Nitro Mesh kit.
