DiMarzio

Description

The DiMarzio DP175 True Velvet is a vintage-style single-coil pickup that's clean and bright. The True Velvet pickup gives your high strings sweet sound above the 12th fret. The DiMarzio True Velvet was designed to make this happen by tuning the coil to a frequency range that's bright but not thin. DiMarzio combines this with a magnet stagger specifically designed to enhance string balance, which produces great clarity, even with full chords. The neck and middle models have the same specs except for reverse wind / reverse polarity on the middle pickup for hum cancellation in the 2 and 4 positions. The bridge pickup is just a touch warmer and louder, so the transition between pickup positions is very smooth and natural. The DiMarzio DP175 single coil pickup comes standard with hand-ground magnets and vintage cloth covered wire.

This pickup is in a Fender Standard Strat; I replaced the stock ceramic pickups with a Dimarzio FS1 (Bridge), True Velvet Middle and Neck. Great balance with this combo. I think I've seen some reviewers say that the True Velvet neck pickup will give you an "SRV" sound--I don't think that's the case, as my experience with Texas Specials (used to own an SRV Strat) is that they are more scooped-sounding and trebly than the True Velvets. The True Velvets have a very full, clear sound with very good bass response. They sound great with overdrive. I think I would equate the clean tone to Gilmour's "Shine on you crazy diamond" tone. Rolling off the volume (I have a treble bleed circuit installed) on an overdriven amp produces amazing clean tones with some bite that is very useful. Overall very happy with the whole combination of Dimarzio pickups!

I've had a Fender American Select Stratocaster for 2 years and recently realized how bland the Tex-Mex single coils in the middle and neck were. I replaced both with these True Velvets and it really woke up the guitar. These have a great vintage sound with just the right amount of bite. They also blend well with the Diamondback humbucker in the bridge. I always saw the S-1 switching in this guitar as a novelty, but with the True Velvets, I get some incredible tones using it. These pickups are also much less expensive then the others I was considering.
