DW Design Series Shell Pack Set Up

Great shells at a better price

The shell pack is made up of 10x8 and 12x9 rack toms, a thundering 16x14” floor tom and a powerful, punchy 22x18” bass drum. The 8-ply North American maple shell is slightly thicker than other DW shells. The added ply of maple makes them sound even punchier.

The Design Series uses DW’s patented HVLT technology, just like DW’s high-end Collector’s Series. HVLT stands for Horizontal Vertical Low Timbre. This means the outer ply is horizontal, which gives the drums a fundamentally lower note. It comes in handy for drummers playing a lot of different styles and tunings.

DW Design Series Mounted Rack Tom and STM System

Redesigned hardware

All of DW's ingenious design elements are here. The new mini turret lugs are a smaller version of their famous turret lug. The smaller lug shows off even more of the beautiful satin finish these drums come with. The STM (suspension tom mount) system hangs the drum by the lug, taking the weight and strain off of the hoop. This allows the drum to resonate completely without choking the sound. The rubber rings and gaskets help reduce unwanted buzz and metal-on-metal contact. The True Pitch tuning rods have a higher thread count for more accurate tuning.

DW Design Series Bass Drum Head with DW Outline Logo

Pro-quality heads by Remo

The Design Series boasts DW by Remo heads, which are designed and made to DW's exacting specifications. The bass drum head features the unique "outline" logo on a classic-looking white suede head. The Remo heads are such high-quality that they're ready to rock right out of the box. On stage or in a session, they sing like any other after-market head.

Great drums! I Upgraded my 20+ year old Tama kit to these and I've been very impressed with the quality of the workmanship as well as the sound. I've only tuned the factory drum heads once since I bought them and they still sound great which is unheard of for factory heads. I can only imagine how great they will sound with nicer heads on them. Wish they came with some hardware for the price but otherwise the quality is worth the price tag. The cherry red stain is really nice too.

  • Great sounds and easy the tune.

I Bought the set in the red finish, and I am ecstatic about my purchase. I already own a handful of drum sets, and to be honest I wasn't even looking for a kit when I stumbled upon this. I sat down behind it once, and honestly the tone alone sold me immediately. It has a HUGE beefy tone that is both dynamic and versatile. DW utilizes the HVLT technology with these shells, which basically gives a unique proprietary tone. I have played everything from their high end collector's series and I personally own a Tama B/B set, this holds up to both in sound. Admittedly the set falls short in the lack of attention (not lack of quality) to some of the smaller details, like the turret lugs, or their floor tom legs. When you get a Collector's series, you're really paying for a set that is hand made by a human and overseen with the utmost quality. I can see the appeal in that, but to me I honestly appreciate the simplicity of the design series. They get an absolute 5 out of 5 from me, and I think it's the best drum set in the price point by miles.

Do these drums start getting made day of purchase? Also, does the satin change anything other than the look of the drums?? I mean like sound/quality wise.

    Open Reply - Ronald
No. We keep them boxed in a warehouse until purchased. They are pre-made before ordering. And the finish doesn't change in any obvious way as far as sound goes.
