    35+ year player here, elementary school through university level (concert band / jazz ensemble) and this is what a maple snare drum should sound like. Warm, resonant with a wicked crack. Sounds best tuned to it's highest fundamental. Excellent live projection as well.

    You'll play more notes on your snare drum than on any other drum in your set, so make sure you get a good one. The DW Collector's Maple snare does not disappoint. The maple shell is beautifully done, of course, but the hardware on this drum is really impressive. It has the MAG throw off that lets you play the snare wires loose but no worries about the throw off opening all the way because it has, well, a magnet that holds it closed. Genius! On the other side is the 3P three position butt plate that lets you quickly change to three levels of snare wire tension. Love it! The hoops are super solid and the tension rods have very fine threads that allow you to apply very precise tuning to the drum heads. I also liked that the DW branded head that came on the drum has the tension rods numbered for easier tuning. You can tune this snare from high to low and it sounds great. Highly recommended.

    This review is for the 5x14 version of this snare, bottom line is it's a great maple snare. 10 ply with 6 ply reinforcement rings, tons of body, great crack and the best throw off around.
