Yamaha Powered Studio Monitor Speaker "HS Series"

Yamaha HS Series Powered Studio Monitors

Description
High-performance Speakers and Mounting System
The elegant white-cone speakers used in the HS-series monitors deliver superlative audio performance that is further enhanced by a carefully engineered mounting system. A system of screws and a specially designed mounting ring eliminates spurious vibration and resonance, allowing the speaker to deliver its full sonic potential. Another feature that boosts woofer performance is a magnet selected to produce accurate, solid low-end response. The tweeter frames employ an advanced smooth-contour design that minimizes losses so that high-frequency details come through with remarkable accuracy. The extra thickness of the tweeter frame also minimizes resonance that can interfere with high-end clarity. The overall result is extraordinarily smooth, accurate response throughout the audio spectrum.
The Benefits of Built-in Power and Bi-amplification
Powered, bi-amplified monitor speakers simply make the most electrical and sonic sense, and that's why they have become the first choice of sound professionals the world over for nearfield and midfield monitoring applications. In addition to the obvious advantage that you don't need separate power amplifiers, the fact that power and speakers are integrated in one unit means that the amplifiers can be perfectly matched to the characteristics of the speaker units used so you get consistently superior performance with any source in just about any listening environment. Bi-amplification means that separate power amplifiers are used to drive the low-mid and high-frequency speaker units, and this eliminates interaction between the units as well as the response and phase anomalies introduced by passive crossover networks. Both speaker units can function at optimum performance levels for correspondingly high overall sonic quality.
Large Magnets in an Advanced Magnetic Circuit Design
One feature of the HS-series monitors that you'll hear but are not likely to see is the extra large magnets. In combination with an advanced magnetic circuit design these magnets provide a powerful, uniform, tightly controlled flux field that results in exceptionally smooth response and dynamic capability over a wider frequency range.
Portable, Versatile Monitoring for Your Audio Workstation
All you really need for top-class stereo production capability is a good audio workstation and a pair of HS-series monitors. A system like this is not only portable and extremely easy to set up anywhere you need it, it can also deliver outstanding monitoring performance that will let you get your mixes just right. The response-control features of these monitors let you tweak them for the best response no matter where you set them up.
Serious Surround Production
Although stereo is still the most common format for basic music listening, 5.1 surround has become the audio format of choice for today's advanced visual media, and is beginning to be recognized as a superior vehicle for pure musical enjoyment as well. But to properly mix and produce surround sound you need a good 5.1 monitoring system. The HS-series speakers and subwoofer are the perfect choice if you want competitive surround-monitoring performance without having to spend big-studio megabucks to get it.
Optimum Response in Any Room
Speaker response can vary greatly depending on the size, shape, and surface acoustics of the room in which they're used, as well as how they're placed within that environment. The HS-Series gives you extra room-matching and speaker placement versatility with ROOM CONTROL, MID EQ, and HIGH TRIM response control switches that are specifically designed to compensate for common acoustic deficiencies and monitoring needs. The ROOM CONTROL switch, for example, can be used to compensate for the unnatural low-end exaggeration that usually occurs when speakers are placed close to walls or in corners. The MID EQ switch gives you subtle midrange boost and cut options in addition to flat response, while the HIGH TRIM switch offer the same type of response-tailoring capability for the high frequencies.

Perfect Match - fills in the missing bass!
I bought the 2 high frequency monitors first. To me something was missing. Things to consider: 1. The sub woofer reproduces 20 to 140 Hz reasonably flatly. So what lives there - 20 Hz to 40 Hz one octave, 40 Hz to 80 Hz second octave, 80 Hz to 160 Hz third octave - most instruments only cover 3 octaves. Meaning the bass was mostly missing. Additionally a lot of other real instruments which are not bass note front ends include a component in this range, color. 2. When a speaker cone has low frequency waves it must move great distances to couple with the air to reproduce. If higher frequencies share this cone they suffer doppler shifting ( like a car passing) this causes a warble making for muddy sounds. 3. The low frequency waves are very long, 50 feet plus, coupling to air with this small of a speaker is a trick, notice the speaker works against the floor this changes the coupling and strips any remaining high frequency off. 4. All factory balanced crossover filters are in this subwoofer. 5. Even at low volume the sound is tight and full bodied - I believe all systems should include a frequency balanced sub woofer, but then I am an engineer. 6. If a demo system adds a subwoofer without a crossover in place, don't expect that the sound is representative of a proper system as it will be heavily colored by doppler shifting and be funny sounding.

Dont buy this sub if you need to ref 808's or heavy bass
I deal in bass heavy music with 808's. By the time you cut this sub up to 12oclock on the volume its past breaking up and cracking in sound. The first time I heard it cracking I thought I blowed my speaker. I went and paid for another speaker and installed it and same thing happened. I went back to store and played the same mix on the sub in the store and the same thing happened. I have ruled this sub is not designed for bass heavy music and should take off the the spec sheet that is replicates frequencies at down to 20hz. It cracks at low frequencies and is annoying. I feel ripped off. The matching HS8's I have sound great although people talk down on them

Added the HS 8S to a pair of HS4's. What a difference. The bottom end was lacking. No more. I almost think the HS4's with the HS 8S has better sound than my home audio system. If you are thinking about getting the HS 8S, stop thinking and just get it. Night and day I tell ya.

Yamaha's HS8S Powered Studio Subwoofer sounds most excellent anchoring an already formidable pair of HS8 Powered Studio Monitors which I was already very happy with until of course hearing the lower octaves that are now ever present adding weight and warmth making the overall sound now complete! I can recommend without reservation!

This is nice to pair with HS series monitors. I recommend getting one. Actually, you should get like ten of them and feel bass for days.

would it be possible (or beneficial) to use a rig of 2 hs8s subs (run mono for left and right channels) with 2 hs8 monitors from a keyboard's balanced audio outs? thanks for any thoughts.
I don't believe it would work if you run directly through the keyboard into the units.submitted6 years ago

Hello And thank you in advance for your time and help. What are the best cables needed for the HS8 plus the HS8s running through a Focusrite 6i6?
It depends on how you have it set up, but for the most part the type of cable won't matter since the sub accepts both XLR and 1/4" connections.submitted7 years ago

Do I need an audio interface to pair with this sub and partner speakers?
It would not be necessary to use an audio interface with this subwoofer. However, one can be used if you'd like.It would not be necessary to use an audio interface with this subwoofer. However, one can be used if you'd like.
