The Reflexion Filter 3.5 is a portable device for recording live sound sources with reduced room ambiance. It is an advanced composite wall which is positioned behind any microphone by means of a variable position stand clamp assembly which ships with the product. The main function is to help obtain a 'dry' vocal or instrument recording. This is especially useful in studios without proper acoustic treatment, but can also be used to help record takes in control rooms, where the performer also has to operate the recording device, or in rehearsal studios to reduce ambient noise.

The Reflexion Filter has 6 main layers. Firstly, a strong layer of punched aluminum which allows sound waves to pass through it, diffused, to a layer of absorptive wool. The sound waves then hit a layer of Aluminum foil which helps dissipate energy and break up the lower frequency waveforms, and from here they hit an air space kept open by rods passing through the various layers. The air gap acts as an acoustic barrier. The sound waves then pass to a further layer of wool and then through an outer, punched, aluminum wall which further serve to absorb then diffuse the remaining acoustic energy.

The main absorber has 4 formed pieces of state-of-the-art specialist acoustic absorptive material attached to its face via the extended separation rods, which further serve to absorb and then diffuse the sound waves as they pass to the main filter.

The stand assembly is composed of a mic stand clamp fitting, which attaches by means of a vertical joint to the horizontal bar assembly onto which both the Reflexion Filter, and any standard fitting shock mount can be fixed. The microphone (in its shock mount) can then be moved both vertically and horizontally along the bar, and the Reflexion Filter itself can be moved vertically to obtain the optimum working position.

The various layers both absorb and diffuse the sound waves hitting them, so progressively less of the original source acoustic energy passes through each layer. This reduces the amount of energy hitting untreated walls and other surfaces so there is less of the original source reflected back as unwanted room ambience to the mic. The Reflexion Filter also helps prevent any reflected sound reaching the back and sides of the mic. Its shape and size have been carefully tested to maximize absorption while keeping 'coloration' down to only around 1dB, and leaving the microphone's polar pattern unaffected.

Home Studio

So I just go this the other day and immediately used it for vocals in a small home studio. The vocalist was standing in an open room and singing through an ST77. The sound was great but that mainly comes through the pre, mics and cables. The sound would normal have been relatively thin b/c of the room noises. Instead it sounded great and smooth. No, it was no vocal booth but for a home studio I know nothing that competes other than spending a ton on Auralex. The moving dia. that is in the filter is great and produces a great noise canceling effect. The worse part was setting it up but that wasn't hard really. Overall, it is GREAT. A must have for any SERIOUS engineer

Extremely to Heavy

This piece of gear does its job but the problem comes in when you dont have a sturdy durable mic stand. This piece of gear is extremely to heavy and can become very frustrating. You definitely dont want to sit a 5000 dollar mic in a shock mount connected to this thing because it definitely will come tumbling down. But overall it still does its job. You might need to purchase a 300 dollar mic stand

I opened up the outer shipping box to find that the Refelxion Pro box obviously had been put back together. It was torn, taped, had it own shipping label to Musicians Friend, and the metal screen is dinged up. The tape holding the various pieces of hardware in the box had also been cut. Basically, it looks like everything has been used. I purchased a brand new item, so I'm disappointed not it sE but in GC. It shouldn't have shipped out in the shape the item's packaging was in. It's one thing to precisely cut tape to open a box for some reason, but this had the previous tape ripped off along with parts of the box. When you're paying this much for an item like this, it better be right. This wasn't.

The sE Reflexion Filter is a life saver! It completely smooths every reflection in the room and keeps the voice warm. I also use it for recording guitars (both acustic and electric) and it works great. I only took half star from my analysys because I think the rack mount mechanism can use a little improvement, but besides that it's awesome and I don't know how to work without it nowadays! A must have for sure!

  • Great quality, just too heavy

Still getting used to this product, but the vocals sound much better then they did since I got this reflection filter. The sound is much more isolated. The only thing is it's just too darn heavy, and not the most compact, but otherwise worth the price. This will get you where you need to be for isolated vocals in a non treated room, won't perfect everything, but definitely 10x better to have then not.

at first i was skeptical about buying this filter but after awhile of me looking around and using cheap (affordable) filter i decided to give this a try thinking why not but the moment i assembled this i noticed a big difference in sound quality and that the vocals were much clearer and a lot better then the ghetto looking foam ones it is defiantly worth the money because it will pay for itself in the long run well for me anyways because i sell studio time and even my customers noticed a big difference its like i tell ppl cheap money is only gonna make cheap music especially when it comes to sound quality u never wanna cut corners with that so if i were u jus take a chance i promise u its worth every penny

I have a Warm Audio Condenser Mic from Warm Audio that screws onto a 2" diameter stand. Would it fit into the stand that comes with the shield?

The clamp that attaches to the stand would be too shallow to fit on a 2" diameter stand.
