Worth the money
OK, I have seen some negative reviews on this unit but it seems to me that the negative reviewers may be persons who do not have a whole lot of experience with pro audio recording. Myself, as someone with experience recording in everything from analog to digital using software, hardware, workstations, interfaces, etc, I can honestly say that this is an extremely well engineered product that is smart, intuitive, easy to understand and use and chock-full of functions and extras that you wouldn't have expected from a unit of this type in this price range just a few short years ago. Being able to move tracks to and from computers is amazing and a great time-saver! Being able to record 6 tracks simultaneously is mind blowing for such a small, compact unit! The sound is very quiet and amazing and the unit creates very strong, powerful, robust signals. The industry is growing and creating products by leaps and bounds these days but it all comes down to knowing what you are doing and having experience with recording basics. There is never any substitute for knowledge.

I'm just getting acquainted with the Zoom R16
I got this 2 days ago and have spent several hours with it. I am not experienced with audio recording but I do have a master's degree in engineering. Wow! The manual ! Seriously, it's the worst I've ever seen. I WILL figure out how to work this device. I have recorded one track (yay!) and it sounds great. The potential of the Zoom R16 is very impressive. I will, no doubt, create lots of excellent recordings with this machine. Back to the hardcopy manual that is included, I've read sections repeatedly and still have not understood them. I've read carefully enough that I've found typographical errors in the manual. My intention is not to be negative here. Just be aware that reading the manual will cause self-inflicted head hair loss.

So far, so good. Seems pretty easy. Like anything, there is a learning curve. But it's nice and compact. The battery option is nice.

the r16 is very impressive for it's price point and capabilities. i have owned 4-track tape recorders and adats over the years, I'm thrilled at the power and flexability of the r16. The menu system takes some patience getting to know, but once you figure it out the device does everything you need to make professional sounding home multitrack recordings.
Good!

I love the fact that the r8 has two built in mics. Does this device also have built in mics for quick song sketches, etc.? It looks like it does but I didn't see the specs on the mics listed.
