Zoom LiveTrak L-8: Audio Interface Mode

Description
Zoom's LiveTrak L-8 makes recording and mixing high-quality audio easy for podcasters, musicians and small ensembles. With six studio-grade mic preamps, built-in effects and separate headphone monitor mixes, the L-8 ensures pristine sound for any production.
Six Versatile Mic Preamps Provide Pristine Recordings
The L-8 features six high-performance preamps, each with 48V phantom power, a low noise floor (-121dBU) and up to 54dB of gain for crystal-clear recordings. Two inputs accept hi-Z signals for direct recording of electric guitars and basses. Line-level inputs and a USB stereo return provide additional connectivity. Dial in the ideal sound using the 3-band EQ and reverb/delay effects on each channel.
Multitrack Recording and Mixing On the Go
Record up to 12 tracks simultaneously, plus a stereo mix, directly to an SD card at up to 96kHz/24-bit resolution. Overdub, punch in and create custom mixes with ease while monitoring through the four headphone outputs. Power the L-8 for up to 2.5 hours using four AA batteries or a USB power bank for recording in remote locations. A built-in USB audio interface allows streaming and recording with your computer.
Flexible Monitoring Gives Each Performer Their Own Mix
The L-8 provides three separate monitor mixes so each performer can have a tailored listening experience. Send different combinations of inputs and effects to the three monitor busses for the ideal blend in each performer's headphones or stage wedge. Mute channels, set pan positions and adjust levels for maximum comfort and control over what each performer hears.
Designed for Podcasters and Musicians Alike
Whether you're recording a podcast, livestreaming a performance or laying down tracks for your next album, the L-8 delivers professional results. Dedicated sound pads and mix-minus make it easy to incorporate remote guests and call-ins. Save up to seven "scenes" to quickly recall your favorite settings. The L-8's portable, intuitive design provides an all-in-one solution for audio production on the go.

I had high hopes for a simple mixer, but the L8 has sadly let me down. I originally purchased the L8 four years ago as a live streaming device for a group project. It did not impress. Afterwards, I relegated it as a USB 2.0 audio interface for my synthesizer setup. One major flaw is the lone USB input (not a USB C) - you either use it attached to your computer (mine was a desktop) or to a wall wart/USB power supply. While connected to a computer, any movement of the USB cable causes analog static. Also, roughly within the last year, some type of Windows or device update caused the interface became extremely unreliable. It now shuts off whenever it feels like - right in the middle of recording a track or making a mix. Even when just listening to a YouTube video. I am surprised at the multitude of gleaming positive comments, but my advice is to please do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

This is a great product, although it is most suitable for podcasting and studio recording rather than live performance recording. The primary reason for this is because monitor outputs are only for headphones; there is no auxiliary output for monitoring with speakers. It is nice that you can dial in a separate mix for each of the headphone outputs, but that is only useful in live performance if the musicians are using an in-ear monitoring system.
Pots last about a year

About a month ago, 14 months after purchase, one of the pots went out. Tested the mic on other working pots and it was fine. As I write this, another pot stopped working. 14 months for basic functionality to fail is concerning to say the least.

This mixer has continued to impress me, more quality stuff from the Zoom company. Some random notes about it that I've found top notch: - When using it attached to a computer via USB, you're able to get 2 distinct channels of return/output (Ch.7 and Ch. 8). Specifically, with Ableton, you're able to set up Outputs sending to USB 1-2 (Ch. 7) **AND** USB 3-4 (Ch. 8). I used this with great success as a DJ mixer, with USB 1-2 as my main output and 3-4 as my cue mix. Awesome flexibility. - The pads on Ch. 1-6 are awesome for managing hot levels - I exclusively use this mixer for Zoom (different company?!) video meetings. It's amazing. It's plugged in via USB and is my audio interface -- oddly enough, there is actually an option in Mixer mode called "Audio I/F" (Interface) but you don't need to actually select this to make it function like this. The L8 mixer appears as my Microphone and Speaker option in the Zoom meeting. Any audio from Ch. 1-6 is sent to the meeting and heard by participants (think of these are your send or "Mic" audio). The meeting audio from your end is heard through Ch. 7 as the USB 1-2 audio (your return channel). Using different mix channels, I have it set up so that my mic can feed into the meeting and I can monitor the meeting through speakers, but I have no feedback whatsoever because the mic audio isn't in the monitor mix. It's amazing. Also, you can still use the onboard audio recording function in the L8, which I use as a backup audio record. - I also use this for music multitracking and it's great. You may have to get a little creative with your inputs, but you can do really excellent recordings on this unit. One minor critique: the old Zoom H4n recorder could record WAV or .mp3 files of varying bitrates, the L8 only records WAV which is fine but sometimes you just don't need the highest quality audio revolution so fingers crossed this some kind of firmware update that can make this happen, otherwise it's just a simple file
