ZVEX

collapse expand iconDescription

The Box of Rock is ZVex's first distortion pedal, highly specialized to simulate the "everything on 10" sound of a classic Marshall amplifier. You can use the Box of Rock effectively with many different amplifiers, but you might want to run it through a Marshall at least once. Use your guitar's volume control to adjust the amount of distortion you want, all the way down to very clean and clear with most drive settings. Each of these distortion pedals is hand-painted, so each will be a little different from the rest. The ZVex Box of Rock also contains an extremely high-headroom, unity-to-50X gain booster with nominal input impedance and low hiss.

The pedal itself is great, sounds just like an old Marshall amp. However, it's advertised as the hand painted version and so received the screen printed Vexter version.

This is like some crazy sledge hammer of an overdrive. Through my Fender Blues Deluxe, the insane amount of volume this pedal gives me is ear-splitting. And the boost is actually my favorite feature. I use it for clean-tone solos. The boost gets me that additional volume without any "mud" to cut thru the mix. The OD/gain side of the Box are tones based to mimic the Marshall JTM45. It truly nails it. I keep my amp on the clean side when playing live, and by stomping on the Box Of Rock for the Marshall crunch tones, I got all the gain I need.

The authenticity of this pedal was a real suprise. It sounded very close (not exact) to a JCM or even a plexi if you learn to really utilize the boost. All in all it passed my expectations and is a great choice if you want that classic Marshall tone without dishing out the big bucks.
