Wampler

collapse expand iconDescription

Looking back through history of great fuzz tone, there have been some truly outstanding examples—in particular, the tones that have been achieved by running a fuzz into a screaming stack. The kind of tones that are just earth shattering in their depth, aggression and smoothness.

Wampler took the base tones from a very famous Wampler Pedal (one that has the characteristics of a famous stacked, EL34 driven, amp) and decided this was the best foundation to build the perfect fuzz and deliver it in a unit that sounds as good as it feels powerful.

With two completely different clipping options (not just the basic silicon or germanium option like most) you can achieve those classic fuzz big tones that compress massively across the bottom or you can tighten them up and have it respond more like a distortion. With this, you get all of the tone with none of the side effects. Some people say it sounds like a fuzz but feels like a distortion, so yes, you CAN have the best of both worlds.

If you are a fan of the tones of the players like David Gilmour or Eric Johnson (and let’s face it, who isn’t), then it could be that the Velvet Fuzz is the pedal you are looking for. Welcome to a new world of thick as a brick, wall crumbling and window shattering fuzz.

I use this pedal with a Fender telecaster and I love it. It can sound like a modern fuzz pedal or, flip a switch, and it sounds more like a distortion pedal. Very usable sounds and, if you own a Wampler pedal, the foot switch is so smooth. Absolute awesome pedal that sounds fantastic. This is my second Wampler pedal and I will buy more. Not sure how Wampler makes his pedals sound so much better than everyone else's, but he does. Buy one, make you single coils fat, and find love.

After striking out on the flagship fuzz boxes like the BigMuff, I decided to up my budget and get a "boutique" fuzz pedal. Had read that the Velvet Fuzz is one of the rare fuzz pedals that has note clarity even when fuzz is boosted. My problem with most fuzz is that when you play chords it sounds muddy and blurred, like the notes were all thrown into a blender and blurted out together, no matter what the knobs are set at. This is where the Velvet Fuzz sets itself apart from the pack, it has incredible clarity even with chords and fuzz past 12 o' clock. It has amazing tone quality, and is very versatile. I was able to get barely distorted fuzzy Pink Floyd tones, searing clipping fuzz sound of Nirvana, and everything in between. This truly is the best fuzz I've played on, its double the price of the average fuzz but QUADRUPLE the quality. Cant recommend this pedal enough, especially for people who want a fuzz box that isn't unreasonable in its tonal capabilities.

This review is for the Velvette Fuzz 2.0. For me the in and out on top was a plus as it was easier to fit on my pedal board. The upgraded switch is quick and silent - awesome! This is a modern fuzz with a lot of flexibility and tones available. Some Fuzz boxes have a significant amount of rolloff of bottom end - but not this one - plenty of deep end for a full and big sound. The opposite of this pedal would be the Mahoney Fuzz Tone which delivers a pronounced buzzy midrange (I have this pedal too and it compliments the Velvette Fuzz well as they live in completely different spaces) The Big and Tight switch is highly useful with Big delivering rougher Fuzz and broader frequency range, and Tight delivering smoother Fuzz with a little more compressed and pronounced midrange. Blends with delay and reverb pedals for great Pin Floyd, Eric Johnson and Carlos Sanatana lead lines. When playing Rhythm guitar styles - the significant bottom end really pops with HUGE sound and tones. It sounds big with my Stratocaster and HUGE with my Les Paul. In a mix, the pronounced bottom end may fight with the bass. This is my second Wampler pedal with my first being the Tumnus ( another outstanding pedal). I can't say enough about the quality and build of these pedals. Check out some of Brian Wampler's informative videos on youtube. He strikes me as a really great guy who would be fun to hang with - and from his videos it strikes me he spends a lot of time in designing and tweaking his pedals. This will not be my last Wampler pedal I promise you that.
