Our almost 10 year old new drum student chose these rather fat drumsticks to be his first all-his-own pair after using hand me downs the first few months. While his fab instructor noted that they are more for marching bands, he also said that if anything, it'll make moving down to something more reasonably narrow a cinch later! Silver lining! But these sticks are great and our son loves being able to grasp them more easily. Definitely recommend and suggest just going with what works individually, and not worrying about rules. ;)
